Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R450 Specifications
Chassis
The Dell PowerEdge R450 server is an entry-level server that can pack-a-punch! This 1U server is Dell’s 15th generation upgrade of the PowerEdge R440. We will showcase some of the differences and similarities between the R450’s chassis.
Bay Counts
There are two different bay count and form factor options to choose from for the R450. The two options are 4 Bay LFF and 8 Bay SFF. The 4 Bay LFF chassis accepts up to four 3.5” hot-swap SAS or SATA drives. 2.5” drives can be installed using a 2.5” to 3.5” adapter. The 8 Bay SFF chassis accepts up to eight 2.5” SAS or SATA drives. Neither of these chassis have NVMe capable backplanes.
Chassis Rear and PCIe Slots
There is only one rear configuration for the PowerEdge R450 server. The rear of the chassis consists of two low-profile PCIe slots, a BOSS riser, an OCP slot, two 1GbE RJ45 Ethernet ports, a dedicated iDRAC port, two USB ports, a VGA port, a system ID button, and two hot-swap power supply bays.
Processing Power
The Dell PowerEdge R450 is a dual processor system that accepts 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Only processors with 24 cores or lower can be installed. This means that the R450 supports a maximum of 48 CPU cores.

Memory
The Dell PowerEdge R450 has a total of 16 DDR4 DIMM slots that only accepts ECC Registered memory (RDIMMs). Module capacities of 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB can be used with the R450. A maximum RAM capacity of 1TB (1024GB) can be achieved with a configuration of 16x64GB RDIMMs. Memory speeds of 2666MT/s and 2933MT/s can be used with the R450. Technically, modules with speeds of 3200MT/s can be installed, but they will clock down to either 2666MT/s or 2933MT/s, depending on the processor that you have installed. The maximum supported memory speed for your system is determined by the CPU that you have installed. For example, if your CPU supports a max of 2666MT/s, and you install a 2933MT/s module, the module will operate at 2666MT/s.
Storage
There are many storage options to choose from for you PowerEdge R450 server. The form factor of your drives will be determined by what chassis you have. With a 4 Bay LFF system, you can install 3.5” drives. 2.5” drives can be installed as well, but you will need a 2.3” to 3.5” drive converter. The 8 Bay SFF chassis accepts 2.5” drives. Each chassis has the option to use two M.2 drives via the BOSS-S1 riser. The R450 server can use HDDs, SSDs, M.2s, and uSDs. Supported drive interfaces are SAS and SATA.

NVMe Options & Upgrades
A handful of 15th generation Dell servers have loads of NVMe support. Unfortunately, the Dell PowerEdge R450 is not one of those systems. With that said, the R450 is still a fantastic server. If NVMe is a requirement, then the R450 is not the server for you. For those of you who don’t need NVMe, the R450 can still be a great option. Whether it’s the right server for you, depends on your application.
Power Supplies
Power Supply Overview
The Dell PowerEdge R450 has two hot-swap power supply bays on the rear of the system. Because this system supports hot-swap PSUs, you can remove/add a power supply while the system is running, as long as one unit remains within the system. There is a total of three power supply options to choose from: 600W Platinum mixed mode, 800W Platinum mixed mode, and 1100W -48VDC.
Wattages
As shown above, there are three wattages for the R450: 600W, 800W, and 1100W. These are all great options, but if you server requires a lot of power, then the 800W or 1100W are the way to go. For less power-intensive applications, the 600W works great.
Voltages
Each power supply has a voltage associated with it. Both the 600W and 800W options are mixed mode, meaning that they support a power input of 100-240VAC or 240VDC. The 1100W power supplies options only works with -48VDC to -60VDC power inputs.
RAID Options
There are a handful of storage controllers/adapters that can be used with the PowerEdge R450. Both RAID (PERC) and non-RAID options can be used. The option that is best for you depends on you application. There is also an option to use a software RAID. Non-RAID adapters cannot configure RAID, but can be used as a storage controller as well as a data controller. PERC RAID controllers on the other hand, can configure RAID. A software RAID can also configure RAID, but it is more limited when compared to a hardware RAID.

Network Interface Card Options
In order to connect a device to the internet, it needs some type of networking card. Networking cards can manifest as a port that is integrated on the motherboard, or as a separate card. The PowerEdge R450 server can accept up to one OCP network card as well as PCIe network cards. PCIe cards must be low-profile in order to install it into the R450. There are also two 1GbE RJ45 ports built in the back of the server.
