Chassis

The Dell PowerEdge R350 is a 1U server designed for small to medium-sized businesses. The R350 builds upon the R340 from the previous generation of servers. We will highlight some of the differences and similarities between the R350’s chassis options.

Bay Counts

There are two different bay count options and form factors to choose from for the R350 server. These options are 8 Bay SFF and 4 Bay LFF. The 8 Bay SFF options accepts up to eight 2.5” hot-swap SAS/SATA HDDs or SSDs. The 4 Bay LFF chassis accepts up to four 3.5” hot-swap SAS/SATA drives. 2.5” drives can be installed using a 2.5” to 3.5” adapter.

Chassis Rear and PCIe Slots

There is only one possible rear configuration for the PowerEdge R350. The rear includes two low-profile PCIe slots, a serial connector, VGA port, two 1GbE RJ45 Ethernet ports, a dedicated RJ45 iDRAC port, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, a system ID button, CMA jack, two BOSS riser slots, and two hot-swap power supply bays.

Processing Power

The Dell PowerEdge R350 server is a single processor system. The CPU socket accepts Intel Xeon E-2300 processors with up to 8 cores and Intel Pentium processors with up to 2 cores.

Memory

The Dell PowerEdge R350 server consists of four DDR4 DIMM slots. There are two memory channels that each contain two DIMM slots. DIMM slots are colored so you can easily differentiate channels. Only one type of memory can be used with the R350 which is non-ECC unbuffered (UDIMMs). The greatest possible RAM configuration that you can reach with this system is 128GB with 4x32GB UDIMMs. Memory speeds of 2666MT/s, 2933M/s, and 3200MT/s can be used with the R350. The maximum supported memory speed for your system is determined by the processor that you have installed. If your system is using an Intel Pentium processor, then it will be limited to a memory speed of 2666MT/s. With Intel Xeon E-2300 processor, you can achieve a max memory speed of 3200MT/s. If the max memory speed of your system is lower than the speed of the install modules, then the modules will clock down to the max speed. For example, if the installed processor supports a max memory speed of 2666MT/s, and you install 3200MT/s modules, the modules will clock down to 2666MT/s.

Storage

The Dell PowerEdge R350 server has a handful of different storage options. All chassis for the R350 have 3.5” drives bay, but 2.5” drives can still be installed using a 2.5” to 3.5” drive adapter. The R250 the use of HDDs, SSDs, and M.2s. Supported drive interfaces are SATA and SAS.

Supported Drives

NVMe Options & Upgrades

If you’re looking for a server with tons of NVMe support, then the R350 is not the system for you. With this said, the PowerEdge R350 is still a great system, but whether its right for you is determined by what you want to do with it. If NVMe is something that you do not need, then the R350 can be a fantastic server. None of the R350’s chassis have an NVMe capable backplane, so you cannot install NVMe U.2 drives. M.2 drives can be installed via the BOSS-S2 module, however there is not support for NVMe M.2 drives.

Power Supplies

The Dell PowerEdge R350 can hold up to two hot-swap power supplies. There are really only two power supply options to choose from for this server. The first option is 600W Platinum 100-240VAC. The second option is 600W Platinum 240VDC. The wattage and efficiency rating are the same for each power supply. The only difference is the voltages. The 100-240VAC option supports a greater voltage range than the 240VDC version.

RAID Options

The Dell PowerEdge R350 server has multiple different storage controllers to choose from. There are both RAID (PERC) and non-RAID options. Both types included some great options, but the one that’s bets for you depends on your application. You can also use a software RAID. Non-RAID adapters cannot be used to configure RAID. They can only be used as a boot controller or data controller. On the other hand, PERC RAID controllers cannot configure RAID. A software RAID does the same thing as a hardware RAID, but it is limited compared to a hardware RAID.

Network Interface Card Options

In order to connect a device to the internet, it needs some type of networking card. Networking cards can manifest as a port that is integrated on the motherboard, or as a separate card. The PowerEdge R350 has no option to add in an OCP card, but they can accept PCIe network cards. PCIe cards must be low-profile in order to install it into the R350. There is also two 1GbE RJ45 ports built in the back of the server.
