Each chassis supports hot-swap drives, meaning that drives can be added or removed while the system is powered on. There is also no LFF (3.5") option for the R840.

8 Bay SFF

The 8 Bay SFF chassis for the PowerEdge R840 accepts up to eight 2.5" SAS/SATA hard drives or solid-state drives. The rear of the chassis includes a network daughter card, a serial connector, a VGA port, two type A USB 3.0 ports, a dedicated iDRAC LAN port, four full-height PCIe slots, two low-profile PCIe slots, and two hot-swap power supply bays.

24 Bay SFF

The R840's 24 Bay SFF chassis accepts up to twenty-four 2.5" SAS/SATA/NVMe drives. The rear of the 24 Bay SFF chassis includes a network daughter card slot, a serial connector, a VGA port, two type A USB 3.0 ports, a dedicated iDRAC LAN port, four full-height PCIe slots, two low-profile PCIe slots, and two hot-swap power supply bays.

24 + 2 Bay SFF

The 24 + 2 Bay chassis accepts up to twenty-four 2.5" SAS/SATA/NVMe drives in the front and two 2.5" SAS/SATA drives in the rear. The rear of this chassis includes a network daughter card slot, a serial connector, a VGA port, two type A USB 3.0 ports, a dedicated iDRAC LAN port, two full height PCIe slots, two low-profile PCIe slots, two 2.5" drive bays, and two hot-swap power supply bays.

Processing Power

The Dell PowerEdge R840 has four LGA3647 that each accept 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors. A max of 28 cores per processor is supported, meaning that the R840 supports a total core count of 112.

Memory

DIMM slots & Memory Channels

The Dell PowerEdge R840 is a DDR4 based machine with 48 DIMM slots and 16 total memory channels. Each memory channel consists of three DIMM slots.

Supported Memory Types

The Dell PowerEdge R840 server accepts ECC Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM), Non-volatile memory (NVDIMM), and Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory (DCPMM). It is important to not mix different memory types unless you are mixing LRDIMMs and DCPMMs together. Mixing together other types can lead to issues such as boot failure.

Supported Memory Capacities

Module capacities of 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. 128GB modules are only available as Load Reduced and Intel Optane PMem. 256GB modules are only available as Load Reduced and Intel Optane PMem. Lastly, 512GB modules are only available as Intel Optane PMem.

Max Configurations

With ECC Registered memory, the max RAM capacity you can achieve is 3TB (3072GB) via a configuration of 48 x 64GB modules. With Load Reduced memory, the max RAM capacity you can achieve is 12TB (12288GB) via a configuration of 48 x 256GB. With Non-volatile memory, a max RAM capacity of 192GB can be achieved via 12 x 16GB modules. Only 12 NVDIMMs can be installed. You can install 32GB RDIMMs in the remaining 36 DIMM slots, bringing the total RAM capacity to 1.3TB (1344GB). Finally, for Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, the max RAM capacity that can achieved is 12.28TB with a configuration of 24 x 512GB modules. If you mix DCPMMs and LRDIMMs, you can achieve a max RAM capacity of 15.36TB via a configuration of 24 x 512GB DCPMMs and 24 x 128GB LRDIMMs.

Supported Memory Speeds

The Dell PowerEdge R840 supports module speeds of 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, 2666MT/s, and 2933MT/s. 3200MT/s modules can be installed, but will clock down to the fastest possible speed for your server's configuration. The processor that you have installed will determine the fastest supported memory speed is for your configuration. For example, is you install a processor that has a max memory speed of 2666MT/s, and you install a 2933MT/s module, the module will operate at 2666MT/s.

Storage

There are two possible bay count options for the PowerEdge R840: 8 Bay SFF and 24 Bay SFF. Both of these chassis support 2.5" hot-swap drives. There is no 3.5" option for the R840.

Supported Drives (2.5")
Type Speeds Max Capacity (Per Drive)
SAS 7.2K, 10K, 15K 2.4TB
SATA 7.2K 2TB
SSD 6Gb/s, 12Gb/s 7.68TB

Power Supplies

How Many Power Supplies does the R840 Support?

The PowerEdge R840 supports up to two hot-swap power supplies units (PSUs). Hot swap means that PSUs can be added or removed while the system is powered on as long as one unit remains plugged into the system.
