The Dell PowerEdge R930 is a Quad Processor 4U rackmount server.  Each CPU controls two memory risers.  Each riser has 12 DIMMs and there are four memory channels, resulting in 3 DIMMs per memory channel.  Along with the standard Registered DIMM, the Dell PowerEdge R930 also supports Load Reduced DIMMs.  Voltage for DDR4 modules is 1.2V.  Different speeds can be mixed but the modules will function at the slowest speed installed.  2400 is the fastest speed possible.  You can install 2666, 2933 or 3200 DIMMs but they will simply clock down.  No need to speed extra money.  You cannot mix LRDIMMs and RDIMMs.  They will not function together.  We recommend matching memory.  All kits from Cloud Ninjas will be matching.

• Voltage of the modules will be 1.2V.  This is the voltage for DDR4 server DIMMs.
• Do NOT mix LRDIMMs with RDIMMs.  They will not function together.

• Single rank, dual rank and quad rank DIMMs are all supported.

1. What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R930 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R930 Server can be upgraded using 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB DIMMs.  Note: ECC Registered tops out at 32GB per DIMM and Load Reduced can utilize 64GB or 128GB per DIMM.  This is the advantage of LRDIMMs.
   
   
2. What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R930 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R930 Server can support memory modules at speeds of 1866, 2133, 2400, 2666, 2933 and 3200MT/s.  Note: 2400MT/s is the fastest speed possible.
   
   
3. What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R930 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R930 Server supports ECC Registered RDIMMs and Load Reduced LRDIMMs.  ECC Unbuffered is not supported.
   
   
4. What is ECC Registered Memory and does the R930 accept it?
   The Dell PowerEdge R930 Server supports ECC registered memory.  ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.  This is the most common type of server DIMM.
   
   
5. What is ECC Unbuffered Memory and is it compatible with the PowerEdge R930?
   The Dell PowerEdge R930 Server does not support ECC unbuffered server memory. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R930 Server does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. Hyper-cloud DIMM (HCDIMM or HDIMM) is considered load reduced memory which is 240-pin, 72 bit wide. LRDIMM differs from low capacity, low voltage registered memory modules (LV RDIMM).
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R930 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
   
   
8. What is max memory configuration for Dell R930?

   This one is bit complicated so we will break down.  There are four CPUs for the Dell PowerEdge R930 Server.  Each CPU supports 2 memory risers.  Each memory riser supports 4 memory channels so ultimately 1 CPU supports 8 memory channels.
   
   
10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
    This is rather easy.  Dell has labeled the motherboard and color coded that memory tabs on the DIMM slots.  White is the start of the Memory Channel.  Black is the second slot.  Green is the third slot.
