The R910 is a Quad Processor server.  Each processors supports two memory risers.  Each memory risers has 8 DIMMs slots meaning each CPU supports 16 DIMM slots. There are four memory channels per memory riser which equals eight memory channels per CPU. Each memory channel manages two DIMM slots.  This is important for quad rank DIMMs.  The R910 only support ECC Registered.  ECC Unbuffered and Load Reduced memory are not compatible.  The R910 also supports options for standard 1.5V or low voltage 1.35V. You cannot mix different memory voltages. Different speeds can be mixed.  We do not recommend mixing speeds as the modules will clock down to the slowest speed installed.

• There are a total of 64 DIMM slots on the Dell R910 server.
• Server runs on DDR3 based memory architecture.
• Speed options for the PowerEdge R910 are 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz depending on the type of memory module.  Will generally clock down to 1066MHz.
• Sizes supported: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB ECC Registered (RDIMM)
• The R910 maxes out at 2TB (64 x 32GB) of DDR3 ECC Registered memory for mirroring and sparing.  Make sure to have latest BIOS and correct CPUs.
• According to Dell's spec sheet 1TB is the max.  But we are here to let you know that 2TB is the true max and can be achieved with 32GB DIMMs.
• In order to use 32GB DIMMs, you must have the R910 Gen II memory risers.  This is very key.  32GB DIMMs will not work with the R910 Gen I risers.
• Single-, dual-, and quad-rank DIMMs can be 1066MHz or 1333MHz.
• There are 8 Memory Risers.  Each riser has 8 DIMM slots and 4 Memory Channels.  Each memory channel supports 2 DIMMs.  Important for quad rank memory.
• Low Voltage 1.35V and Standard Voltage 1.5V are supported.  DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT MEMORY VOLTAGES.
• Load Reducing memory is not compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R910.
• ECC Unbuffered memory is not compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R910.
• Non-ECC Unbuffered Desktop memory is also not supported.

   The Dell PowerEdge R910 Server fasted speed supported is 1066 MT/s.  You can install 1600MT/s and 1333MT/s, but they will clock down to 1066MT/s.
   
   Note: The system can support DIMM at 1067 MHz by limiting two DIMM per DDR channel.
   
   
3. What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R910 Server?

4. What is ECC Registered Memory?  Will my R910 work with ECC Reg memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R910 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is ECC Unbuffered Memory?  Does the Dell R910 support ECC UDIMMs?
   The Dell PowerEdge R910 Server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?  Does the Dell R910 support LRDIMMs?
   The Dell PowerEdge R910 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R910 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels. Memory sparing and mirroring is only available for dual or quad processor configurations at 64 GB fully populated.

    Dell has labeled the memory risers to make it easy to identify.  The DIMM slots are also color coded.  White is the first slot in the channel and black is the second slot in the channel.  A = the first channel and B = the second channel.  Review the motherboard on the memory riser for more details.
