Dell PowerEdge R830 Memory Configuration Guide
The Dell PowerEdge R830 is a Quad Intel Processor system with 48 DIMM slots. There are 12 DIMM slots per CPU. There are four memory channels per CPU. Each memory channel manages three DIMM slots. White is the first slot in the channel. Black is the second slot. Green is the third slot in the channel. ECC Registered and Load Reduced modules are compatible. ECC Unbuffered is not supported. Speed options are 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s and 2666MT/s. 2666 operates are 2400MT/s speed. You cannot mix RDIMMs with LRDIMMs. Sizes supported are 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB DDR4 server memory. You can mix different speeds, but we do not recommend. The modules will operate at slowest speed installed.
Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R830 Memory Upgrade Tips
- The total number of DIMM slots for the R830 is 48.
- There are 4 CPUs. Each processor controls 12 DIMM slots.
- There are 4 memory channels per CPU and 3 DIMMs per memory channel.
- The PowerEdge R830 supports two types of memory: ECC Registered and Load Reduced memory.
- Both are excellent options. LRDIMMs allow for twice the scalability.
- You cannot mix ECC Reg with LRDIMMs inside the same system. Will result in errors.
- With ECC Registered, the Dell PowerEdge R830 will support module sizes of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB DDR4 memory.
- With load reduced, the Dell PowerEdge R830 will operate with DIMM sizes of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB DDR4 server memory.
- Speed options include 2133 MT/s, 2400 MT/s or 2666 MT/s. Worth noting, 2666 will function at 2400MT/s speed.
- You can mix speeds. Faster DIMMs will function at slowest DIMM speed installed.
- 1.2V is the standard DDR4 voltage for Dell R830 memory.
- White is the start of the a new memory channel for the PowerEdge R830. Black is second followed by green in third.
- When purchasing memory upgrade kits, we recommend to purchase identical memory modules. Cloud Ninjas only ships matching DIMMs.

Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R830 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R830 server?
The Dell PowerEdge R830 server can be upgraded using 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB memory modules. Note for 64GB DIMMs you must use DDR4 LRDIMMs. Buy you memory upgrade kit from Cloud Ninjas.
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R830 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R830 server can support memory modules at speeds of 2133, 2400 or 2666 MT/s. It is worth noting, 2666 will operate at 2400MT/s which is the true fastest speed. We recommend ordering 2400 speed RAM.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R830 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R830 server accepts twp types of memory. ECC Registered RDIMM and Load Reduced LRDIMM. ECC Unbuffered is not compatible with the Dell R830 server. Only DDR4 memory is supported. DDR2, DDR3 and DDR5 will not work with the R830 server.
- What is ECC Registered Memory? Does the Dell R830 work with ECC Reg RAM?
The Dell PowerEdge R830 server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is ECC Unbuffered Memory? Will my PowerEdge R830 accept ECC UDIMMs?
No. The Dell PowerEdge R830 server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory? Are LRDIMMs compatible with the R830 server?
Yes! The Dell PowerEdge R830 server does support load reduced server memory (LRDIMMs). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading. The LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. The server will view them as dual rank modules, which allows them to break the rank rule. Simply put, LRDIMMs are better technology than RDIMMs and allow higher scalability.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R830 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
- What is max memory configuration for the Dell R830 server?
It depends on RAM type. The Dell PowerEdge R830 Server supports the standard maximum configuration of 1.5TB using 48 x 32GB 2400MT/s ECC Reg RDIMM. Whereas, the true max configuration for the R830 is 3TB using 48 x 64GB DDR4 2400MT/s Load Reduced LRDIMM. Buy your memory kits from your favorite ninjas.
- How many memory channels does the R830 server have?
The PowerEdge R830 server has 48 DIMM slots across 4 CPUs. This means there are 12 DIMM slots per CPU. There are four memory channels per CPU. Each channel supports three DIMMs. The total number of channels is 16 memory channels.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
Dell has color coded the tabs on the DIMM slots. White is the first slot in the channel. Black is the second slot. Green is the third slot. A is the first channel. B is the second channel. Dell has labeled the motherboard as well to make it easy to identify. Please refer to the Dell technical guide above for more details.
