Dell PowerEdge R815 Memory Configuration
The R815 is a Quad Processor system with 8 DIMM slots per CPU. There are four memory channels per CPU. Each memory channel manages two DIMM slots. Along with standard RDIMMs and UDIMMs, the R815 also supports options for low voltage. Different speeds can be mixed but the modules will function at the slowest speed installed.
Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R815 Memory Upgrade Tips
- The PowerEdge R815 supports 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB RDIMMs and 1GB and 2GB UDIMMs.
- The PowerEdge R815 can hold up to 512GB of memory (32 x 16GB RDIMMs)
- The DDR3 memory interface consists of 4 memory channels per processor socket. Each channel supports up to two RDIMMs for single/dual/quad rank or two UDIMMs.
- Single-, dual-, and mixed- (single and dual) rank DIMM types can support speeds up to 1333MHz. Quad-rank DIMMs can support speeds up to 1066MHz.
- Think Long Term! Purchase the maximum amount that your PowerEdge R815 can hold and avoid wasting time and money on modules you won't be able to use if you upgrade again.
- The total number of memory modules that you should have in your PowerEdge R815 should equal 8, 16, and 32. To properly configure your system, install a minimum of eight memory modules first.
Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R815 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R815 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server can be upgraded using 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB RDIMM.
For a 1TB upgrade, get your 32 GB RDIMM kit at https://cloudninjas.com/.
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R815 Server?
TThe Dell PowerEdge R815 Server can support up to 1066, 1333, or 1600 MT/s in single, dual, and quad rank DIMM based on configuration.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R815 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server supports RDIMM and UDIMM.
- What is ECC Registered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is Unbuffered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is Load Reduced Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server supports unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. LRDIMM differs from low capacity, low voltage registered memory modules (LV RDIMM).
- What is max configuration?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server allows the maximum configuration of up to 1024 GB of RDIMM memory with 32 x 32 GB RDIMM. For a 1TB upgrade, get your 32 GB kit at https://cloudninjas.com/.
- How many memory channels per CPU?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server has 4 memory channels per processor, per processor socket and supports up to 2 RDIMMs for single, dual, and quad rank or two UDIMM.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
The Dell PowerEdge R815 Server memory must be installed based on the silkscreen designator and the System Information Label (SIL) located on the chassis cover.
- Where can I order memory for my server?
Order your memory at https://cloudninjas.com/ by finding and selecting the memory package that is right for you.
- How soon will my RAM arrive?
Orders placed before 8 am are set for same day processing and shipping. Delivery times vary based on carrier and location.
- What is the warranty on memory for the server?
Cloud Ninjas offers a one-year warranty on fully tested, refurbished memory.
- Is this RAM Dell labeled or Dell branded? No. The memory shipped from Cloud Ninjas is compatible with your Dell system. However, it will not have a Dell sticker. We ship major brands such as Samsung, Hynix and Micron.
