Dell PowerEdge R710 Memory Configuration Guide

The R710 is a Dual Processor system with 9 DIMM slots per CPU. There are three memory channels per CPU. Each memory channel manages three DIMM slots. This means the R710 will only support two Quad Rank or two unbuffered DIMMs per channel. Along with standard RDIMMs and UDIMMs, the R710 also supports options for low voltage. Different speeds can be mixed but the modules will function at the slowest speed installed.

• The Dell PowerEdge R710 was designed with eighteen memory slots.
• The PowerEdge R710 is compatible with 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB ECC Registered (RDIMMs) Memory Modules.
• 64GB DIMMs are not compatible with the R710.  32GB is the largest DIMM size.
• This server will also support 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB ECC unbuffered (server UDIMMs).
• Speed options for the PowerEdge R710 include: 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s to 1866MT/s.  Note 1600 and 1866 will clock down to 1333.
• The Maximum amount of unbuffered memory is 96GB (12 x 8GB).
• As mentioned, there are 18 DIMMs and two CPU sockets (LGA1366).
• Each CPU controls nine DIMM slots, which are split into 3 memory channels.
• Each memory channel supports 3 DIMM slots.  This is important and means the Dell R710 is subject to the rank rule.  Learn more in our video.
• Rank rule = no more than 8 ranks per memory channel for ECC Reg RAM.
• This means only 2 Quad Rank Modules per memory channel.  (8 ranks total)
• The same goes for Unbuffered DIMMs. The R710 can only govern two UDIMMs per memory channel, which means 12 UDIMMs total per system.
• The Maximum amount of ECC Registered RAM the Dell PowerEdge R710 server can hold is 384GB (12 x 32GB) 4Rx4 at 1333MT/s.  All 32GB DDR3 are quad rank, which is reason why only 12 x 32GB and not 18 x 32GB.
• The R710 will manage up to 18 single or dual rank DIMMs, or up to 12 Quad Rank modules.
• The R710 support regular voltage (1.5V) and low voltage (1.35V).  Do NOT mix voltages.
• DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT MEMORY TYPES OR VOLTAGES.
• Load reduced (LRDIMM) modules are not compatible with the R710.
• Only DDR3 memory will work. DDR2 and DDR4 modules are not compatible.
• Do NOT mix different memory types, this will result in errors.
• Desktop modules will not work inside a Dell R710 Server.

2. What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R710 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server can support 1066, 1333, 1600 or 1866 MHz memory.  Note: 1866 and 1600 will clock down to 1333, which is the true fastest speed for the R710.
   
   
3. What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R710 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server supports ECC UDIMM or ECC RDIMM.  Load reduced memory is NOT supported. 
   
   
4. What is ECC Registered Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is Unbuffered Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server supports unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory and is it compatible with the Dell R710?
   The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. LRDIMM differs from low capacity, low voltage registered memory modules (LV RDIMM).
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
   
   
8. What is max configuration?

9. How many memory channels per CPU?
   The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server has 3 memory channels with 3 memory sockets per processor and each channel can take 3 DIMM. Its two sets of nine sockets are split to accommodate its dual-processor configuration.
   
   
10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
    Dell has labeled and color coded each DIMM slot to make it easy to identify the different memory channels.  White is the start of the memory channel followed by 2 black DIMM slots which are the 2nd and 3rd slots in the channel.  Every white slot represents the start of a new channel.  Dell has labeled A as the first channel, B as the second channel, C as the third and so forth.  The Dell PowerEdge R710 Server memory must be installed with identical configurations. The memory channels are inserted in numerical order A1 through B1.
