Dell PowerEdge R620 Memory Configuration Guide
The Dell PowerEdge R620 is a Dual Processor system with 12 DIMM slots per CPU. There are eight memory channels total, which means there are four memory channels per CPU. Each memory channel manages three DIMM slots. This is very important and means the R620 runs into the rank rule and will only support two Quad Rank ECC Registered or two unbuffered DIMMs per channel. Load Reduced is a special technology that breaks the rank rule and allows you to load the channel all the way up with quad rank DIMMs. This is why we recommend LRDIMMs over RDIMMs. Better scalability long term. The Dell R620 supports both regular voltage (1.5V) and low voltage (1.35V). You cannot mix different memory types. You cannot mix 1.35V with 1.5V. You can mix different speeds, but please note the modules will function at the slowest speed installed. If you have 23 DIMMs at 1600MT/s and 1 at 1066MT/s then they will all clock down to 1066. This is why we recommend always installing matching DIMMs. All the memory upgrade kits from Cloud Ninjas will be matching kits. This will help to ensure stability while running your Dell R620 server.
Cloud Ninjas' Dell R620 Memory Upgrade Tips
- There are a total of 24 DIMM slots on the Dell R620 server.
- There are 8 memory channels. Each memory channel runs 3 DIMMs per channel.
- Sizes supported: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB ECC Registered (RDIMM); and 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB Unbuffered (UDIMMs); and 16GB, 32GB or 64GB Load Reducing (LRDIMM).
- DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT MEMORY TYPES.
- DO NOT MIX MEMORY VOLTAGES.
- The R620 maxes out at 512GB of ECC Registered memory (16 x 32GB). Whereas unbuffered tops out at 128GB (16 x 8GB).
- The absolute top of the line RAM would be via load reducing memory. The Dell R620 will officially max out at 1536GB (1.5TB) via 24 x 64GB DDR3 load Reduced Server Memory. We do understand Dell's spec sheet shows that 64GBs are not supported. That is incorrect. 64GBs are in fact supported by the R620 server.
- Ranks are important for ECC Registered Server memory. You can install up to two quad-rank (QR) DIMMs and up to three dual-rank (DR) or single-rank (SR) DIMMs per channel.
- Note: LRDIMMs are exempt from the rank rule and you can install 3 quad rank modules per memory channel as needed. One of the big advantages over ECC registered memory.
- Although an LRDIMM is physically a Quad Rank or Eight Rank memory module, logic on the LRDIMM will make it appear as a Dual Rank DIMM to the system, allowing up to three LRDIMMs per channel.
- Speed options for the PowerEdge R620 are 1866MHz, 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz depending on the type of memory module and processor installed. 1866 will clock down to 1600 as stated above.
- Think Long Term! Purchase the maximum amount that your PowerEdge R620 can hold and avoid wasting time and money on modules you won't be able to use if you upgrade again.
- Buy Dell R620 memory today from Cloud Ninjas!
- The total number of memory modules that you should have in your PowerEdge R620 should equal 4, 8, 12, and 24. This will help to provide an even balance across all your memory channels and maximize your overall performance.
- To properly configure your system, install a minimum of four memory modules first.

Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R620 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R620 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 server can be upgraded using , 4 GB UDIMM, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB RDIMM, or 32 GB and 64 GB LRDIMM.
Note: For a 1.5 TB upgrade kit using 64GB DIMMs, make sure you have the latest BIOS and V2 processors.
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R620 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 Server can support 1066MT/s, 1600MT/s, 1333MT/s, and 1866 MT/s based on DIMM and configuration. 1866 will clock down to 1600 which will in fact be the fastest speed.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R620 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 Server supports ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM), ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM).
- What is ECC Registered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is Unbuffered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 Server supports unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 Server supports load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
- What is max configuration?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 server maximum configuration is 1.5TB with the use of 12 LRDIMMs at size the of 64 GB, at the 1600MTs. The max configuration with ECC Registered is 512GB. For a 1.5 TB upgrade, get your 64 GB LRDIMM kit at https://cloudninjas.com/.
- How many memory channels per CPU?
The Dell PowerEdge R620 Server has 8 memory channels total. There are 4 memory channels per processor and each channel can take 3 DIMMs.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
Dell has made this easy for us. They have labeled and color coded the DIMM slots. White is the start of the memory channel. Black is the second slot in each channel. And green is the 3rd slot in each memory channel. If you are not installing 24 DIMMs, then we recommend installing at the start of each memory channel to maximize performance.
- Where can I order memory for my server?
Order your memory on this page by finding and selecting the memory package that is right for you. If you prefer another method, then please email sales@cloudninjas.com. We are here to help.
- How soon will my RAM arrive?
Orders placed before 8 am are set for same day processing and shipping. Delivery times vary based on carrier and location.
- What is the warranty on memory for the server?
Cloud Ninjas offers a one-year warranty on fully tested, refurbished memory.
- Is this RAM Dell labeled or Dell branded? No. The memory shipped from Cloud Ninjas is compatible with your Dell system. However, it will not have a Dell sticker. We ship major brands such as Samsung, Hynix and Micron.
