• The R510 server is an 11th Generation Dell server with 8 RAM slots utilizing DDR3 memory.
• There are several sizes supported: 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB ECC Registered (RDIMM) as well as 2GB, 4GB ECC Unbuffered (UDIMM).
• DO NOT MIX UDIMMs AND RDIMMs. THIS WILL CAUSE ERRORS.
• Unfortunately, Load Reduced memory modules, also known as LRDIMMs, cannot be used inside the R510. The next generation (R520) will be the first Dell Generation (12th Gen) to support LRDIMMs.
• The PowerEdge R510 max configuration is 256GB of ECC Registered memory via 8 x 32GB DDR3 1600MHz. ECC Unbuffered memory will only get up to 32GB (8 x 4GB). ECC Reg is by far the superior option.
• R510 servers run on Intel 5500 or 5600 series CPUs. The motherboard has two processor sockets (LGA1366).
• Each Intel processor supports three Memory Channels. Dell has color coded the DIMMs. White is the start of each channel. The memory slot tabs will be white, white, white and black.
• If you were configuring only two DIMMs, then the best choice is to load them in the first white memory slots on each CPU. However, you should consider maxing this machine out with 8 DIMMs.
• All three ranks are options for the R510. Single Rank and Dual Rank modules are supported as well as Quad Rank memory, which is a nice feature.
• Speed options include: 1866MHz, 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz memory modules.

1. What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R510 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server can be upgraded using 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB ECC Registered RDIMMs or 1 GB, 2 GB or 4 GB ECC Unbuffered UDIMM.

2. What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R510 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server can support 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s and 1866MT/s.  1333 is the actual fastest speed so anything higher will clock down to 1333.  
   
   
3. What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R510 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server supports two types of memory which are DDR3 ECC Registered RDIMM and DDR3 ECC Unbuffered UDIMM.  Unfortunately Load Reduced LRDIMMs are not compatible with the R510.
   
   
4. What is ECC Registered Memory and is it compatible with R510 servers?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is Unbuffered Memory and is it supported by the Dell R510?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server supports unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory and does it work with the R510 server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered inside the R510?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.  Do not mix memory.
   
   
8. What is max memory configuration?

9. How many memory channels does the R510 server have?
   The Dell PowerEdge R510 Server has 8 DIMMs with 6 memory channels.  Each CPU supports 3 memory channels.  This means for each CPU there are 2 channels with 1 DIMM slot and 1 channel with 2 DIMM slots.  Not a common design, but the R410 is the exact same.
   
   
10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
    Memory modules on the Dell PowerEdge R510 Server are inserted in a unique manner within its tri-channel, 2 bank configuration. You can identify the channels with ease since Dell has labeled each slot on the motherboard and color coded the tabs on the DIMM slots.  White is the start of the channel.  Black is the second DIMM slot in the channel.
