Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R410 Memory Upgrade Tips
- Inside this 11th Generation Dell server, the R410 has 8 RAM slots utilizing DDR3 memory.
- Sizes supported include: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB ECC Registered (RDIMM); and 2GB, 4GB ECC Unbuffered (server UDIMM).
- Speeds supported include: 1866MHz, 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz memory modules. 1866 and 1600 clock down to the fastest speed which is 1333MT/s.
- Only two types of RAM supported. ECC Registered and ECC Unbuffered.
- DO NOT MIX UDIMMs AND RDIMMs MEMORY TYPES.
- Load Reduced memory modules (LRDIMMs) are not supported by the R410. You will need to look to the next generation (R420) if you would like to use LRDIMMs.
- The PowerEdge R410 maxes out at 256GB of ECC Registered memory via 8 x 32GB DDR3 1333MHz configuration. Whereas ECC Unbuffered tops out at 32GB (8 x 4GB).
- ECC Registered is the better option for the Dell R410 and what we endorse.
- R410 servers operate on Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 series processors (LGA1366).
- There are 2 CPU sockets. We recommend hex cores such as X5650, X5660, X5670 or E5645.
- Each CPU supports 3 Memory Channels. The channels are color coded. White is the start of the channel so the tabs for the memory slots will be white, white, white and black.
- If you were only loaded 2 Modules, then you would want to insert them in the first white slots on each CPU, which are A1 and B1. We recommend maxing this machine out with 8 DIMMs however.
- Quad Rank memory is support by the Dell PowerEdge R410. This is a nice feature. Single Rank and Dual Rank modules are also accepted.
- Think Long Term! Purchase the maximum amount that your PowerEdge R410 can hold and avoid wasting time and money on modules you won't be able to use if you upgrade again.
- Buy Dell R410 server memory today from Cloud Ninjas!
- The total number of memory modules that you should have in your PowerEdge R410 should equal 2, 4, 6 or 8 to have an even load distribution.
- To properly configure your R410, install a minimum of two memory modules

Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R410 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R410 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server can be upgraded using 1 GB and 2 GB ECC UDIMM, and 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB ECC Registered RDIMM.
Note: Buy your 256GB memory upgrade kit from Cloud Ninjas today.
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R410 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server supports 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz or 1866MHz. 1866 and 1600 will simply clock down to 1333 (the fastest speed possible for the R410).
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R410 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server supports only 2 types of memory. ECC Registered RDIMMs and ECC Unbuffered UDIMMs. LRDIMMs are not supported.
- What is ECC Registered Memory? Is ECC Reg compatible with my Dell R410?
Yes. The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is ECC Unbuffered Memory? Does my Dell PowerEdge R410 support ECC Unbuffered?
Yes. The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server supports unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory? Will LRDIMMs work with the Dell R410?
No. The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered memory inside my R410?
The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server supports the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC. However, you cannot mix memory types. It is recommended to use the identical memory configuration.
- What is max configuration?
The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server allows a maximum configuration of 256GB with a 8 x 32GB ECC Reg RDIMMs at a speed of 1333MT/s. Its flexible memory configurations accept x4 to x8 based RDIMMs. To order a 256 GB upgrade, contact Cloud Ninjas for more details
- How many memory channels per CPU?
The Dell PowerEdge R410 Server has 8 slots total and 4 DIMM slots per CPU. There are 3 memory channels per CPU. 1 channel supports 2 DIMM slots and 2 channels support 1 DIMM slot. A very unusual design.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
Dell has labeled the motherboard and color coded the memory slots. The start of each channel is white. Black is the 2nd DIMM in the memory channel. A1 = first channel and first slot of channel. B1 = second channel and first slot of channel. Utilize your channels to maximize performance.
- Where can I order memory for my server?
Order your memory right here from Cloud Ninjas by finding and selecting the memory package that is right for you. Contact our sales team for more information.
- How soon will my RAM arrive?
Orders placed before 8 am are set for same day processing and shipping. Delivery times vary based on carrier and location.
- What is the warranty on memory for the server?
Cloud Ninjas offers a one-year warranty on fully tested, refurbished memory.
- Is this RAM Dell labeled or Dell branded? No. The memory shipped from Cloud Ninjas is compatible with your Dell system. However, it will not have a Dell sticker. We ship major brands such as Samsung, Hynix and Micron.
