HPE Z840 Memory Configuration
The HPE Z840 is a Dual Processor system with 8 DIMM slots per CPU. There are four memory channels per CPU. Each memory channel manages two DIMM slots. Along with the standard Registered RDIMM, the HPE Z840 also supports options for the Load Reduced LRDIMM. Different speeds can be mixed but the modules will function at the slowest speed installed.
Cloud Ninjas' HPE Z840 Memory Upgrade Tips
- The total number of DIMM slots for the HPE Z840 is 16.
- The HPE Z840 will support 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB DDR4 Registered.
- This server will also support 32GB, 64GB or 128GB Load Reduced Modules (LRDIMM).
- The Maximum amount of RAM the HPE Z840 server can hold is 2TB (16 x 128GB) of Load Reduced server (LRDIMM) memory.
- Whereas the max RAM the HPE Z840 workstation can hold with ECC Registered is 512GB (16 x 32GB) of Registered DIMM (RDIMM) memory..
- When purchasing new memory it is best to purchase identical memory modules to what your system already has. Your current server configuration will determine the supported DIMM type and speed.
- The Z840 runs on 2133MHz or 2400MHz memory. 2666 will work, but will clock down to 2400 speed.
- Think Long Term! Purchase the maximum amount that your HPE Z840 can hold and avoid wasting time and money on modules you won't be able to use if you upgrade again.
Cloud Ninjas' HPE Z840 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the HPE Z840 Workstation?
The HPE Z840 Workstation can be upgraded using single, dual rank, and quad rank 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB DIMM. Get your kit at https://cloudninjas.com/.
- What speeds are supported by the HPE Z840 Workstation?
The HPE Z840 Workstation can support 2133MT/s and 2400 MT/s speed modules. 2666MT/s is supported but will clock down to 2400 MT/s.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the HPE Z840 Workstation?
The HPE Z840 Workstation supports DDR4 with ECC RDIMM and LRDIMM.
- What is ECC Registered Memory?
The HPE Z840 Workstation supports registered memory (RDIMM). ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the Server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is Unbuffered Memory?
The HPE Z840 Workstation does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory?
The HPE Z840 Workstation does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases Server system memory capacity and speed. Hyper-cloud DIMM (HCDIMM or HDIMM) is considered load reduced memory which is 240-pin, 72 bit wide. LRDIMM differs from low capacity, low voltage registered memory modules (LV RDIMM).
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
The HPE Z840 Workstation does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
- What is max configuration?
The HPE Z840 Workstation allows the standard maximum configuration of 512 GB using sixteen 32 GB RDIMM and can be upgraded to 2 TB using sixteen 2 TB LRDIMM. Get your kit at https://cloudninjas.com/.
- How many memory channels per CPU?
The HPE Z840 Workstation has 4 channels that support up to 8 DIMM per processor, 2 DIMM per channel.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
The HPE Z840 Workstation requires that DIMM sockets be populated sequentially beginning with the first white memory channel for processor 1 and then processor 2.
- Where can I order memory for my workstation?
Order your memory at https://cloudninjas.com/ by finding and selecting the memory package that is right for you.
- How soon will my RAM arrive?
Orders will ship within 1-2 business days depending on time of day your order is placed. Orders after 12PM CST will be shipped the following day. Expedited orders are available.
- What is the warranty on memory for the workstation?
Cloud Ninjas offers a one-year warranty on fully tested, refurbished memory.
