HP Z1 G2 Workstation Memory Configuration Guide

The HP Z1 G2 is a Single Processor system with 4 DIMM slots. There are two memory channels which each consist of  2 DIMM slots. You can install up to four 8GB ECC UDIMM modules or up to four 4GB Non-ECC UDIMM modules. It is NOT recommended to mix the speeds on your modules. Mixing speeds will still allow your system to run, but all modules will clock down to the same speed as the slowest module. It is best practice to install DIMMs with matching speeds and capacities for the best performance and reliability. 4. What is ECC Registered Memory?
   ECC memory has the ability to detect and fix memory errors which protects your data against data corruption. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable. When it comes to the HP Z1 G2 Workstation, ECC registered memory is not supported, however ECC unbuffered is.
   
   
5. What is Unbuffered Memory?
   Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller. Unbuffered memory, also known as a UDIMM, is used in regular desktops and laptops. The HP Z1 G2 Workstation supports unbuffered memory; however, it is not considered to be a regular desktop. The Z1 supports ECC unbuffered memory (ECC UDIMM) as well, which is the same as normal unbuffered memory, but has ECC capabilities. Therefore, the HP Z1 can be thought of as a desktop that supports unbuffered server memory.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?
   Load reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs) are designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help lighten the load on a server’s memory bus. The LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. The HP Z1 Workstation does not support load reduced memory.
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   Mixing multiple memory types is never recommended. Doing so may cause issues such as POST/boot failures. It is always recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels. The HP Z1 Workstation supports the use of unbuffered ECC memory and normal unbuffered memory, but not interchangeably.
   
   
8. What is max configuration?
   The HP Z1 G2 Workstation allows the maximum configuration of 32 GB using four 8 GB ECC UDIMMs. 
   
   
9. How many memory channels per CPU?

    The HP Z1 G2 Workstation requires that DIMM sockets only be populated in the order in which they are numbered. DIMM slot 1 would be the start of the first channel and DIMM slot 2 would be the start of the second channel.
