Chassis

The Dell PowerEdge R440 server is a capable enterprise server that builds off of the PowerEdge R430. This system has three different chassis options. The main differences lie between the drive bay counts and the form factor of those bays. The three options are: 4 Bay LFF, 8 Bay SFF, and 10 Bay SFF.

4 Bay LFF

THe 4 Bay LFF chassis for the R440 accepts up to four 3.5" hot-swap SAS/SATA drives. 2.5" HDDs and SSDs can be installed via a 2.5" to 3.5" drive converter.

8 Bay SFF

The 8 Bay SFF chassis accepts up to eight 2.5" hot-swap SAS/SATA hard drives and/or solid-state drives.

10 Bay SFF

The 8 Bay SFF chassis accepts up to ten 2.5" hot-swap SAS/SATA drives. Both hard disk drives and/or solid state drives can be installed.

Processing Power

The Dell PowerEdge R440 server has two LGA-3647 CPU sockets inside that supports 1st Generation or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. A max of 24 cores per processor are supported.

Memory

DIMM Slots & Channels

The Dell PowerEdge R440 has a total of 16 DIMM slots with a total of six memory channels. Each memory channel consists of two DIMM slots.

Memory Types & Module Capacities

The R440 accepts DDR4 memory. ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are supported by this server, but the two types cannot be mixed. Mixing memory types can lead to boot failure. With load reduced memory, an overall greater capacity can be achieved when compared to ECC registered. Module capacities of 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.  It is important to note that 128GB modules can only be installed as an LRDIMM.

Max Configurations

With load reduced memory, a maximum configuration of 2TB can be achieved via 16 x 128GB modules. With ECC Registered, 1TB is the max that you can achieve with a configuration of 16 x 64GB modules.

Supported Memory Speeds

The Dell PowerEdge accepts memory speeds of 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, 2666MT/s, 2933MT/s, and 3200MT/s. Do note, that 2666MT/s is the fastest possible speed for this system with 1st Gen Scalable CPUs and 2933MT/s with 2nd Gen Scalable CPUs.  3200MT/s only supported with 2nd Gen CPUs. Another factor that affects the max memory speed of the system, is the processor that is installed. For example, if the installed processor supports a max speed of 2400MT/s and a 2666MT/s module are installed, the module will operate at 2400MT/s.

Power Supplies

Power Supplies Overview

The R440 server supports up to two hot-swap power supplies. Hot swap means that power supplies can be added or removed if one power supply remains within the system. There is only one power supply option for the Dell PowerEdge R440: 550W AC Platinum. This power supply only comes in a 100-240V AC version.

The Dell PowerEdge R440 has two 1GbE RJ45 ports that are built into the server's motherboard. For additional networking capabilities an optional Mezzanine card can installed into the rear of the system. PCIe network cards can also be installed as well.

Systems Management Solutions

The Dell PowerEdge R440 Server utilizes the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 (iDRAC9), which allows you to easily manage your Dell server. The iDRAC9 web interface provides a variety of useful information and features, that make managing your Dell server an easy task. Features include, but are not limited to hardware monitoring, power control, remote console, control over system settings, firmware update control, storage management, and much more. You can access the iDRAC9 web interface, by setting the iDRAC IP in system setup and searching the IP in a web browser.
