HP Z230 Tower Workstation Memory Configuration Guide
The Z230 is a Single Processor system with 4 DIMM slots. There are two memory channels that each consist of two DIMM slots. Both ECC unbuffered and non-ECC unbuffered memory modules are supported by the Z230. Low Voltage modules are not compatible with the Z230. Different memory types and voltages cannot be mixed. In terms of speed, different speeds can be mixed, but all modules will run on the slowest speed installed. All of the memory inside of your Z230 should be matching modules. With this in mind, our memory kits consist of matching modules to ensure stability.

Cloud Ninjas' HP Z230 Tower Workstation Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the HP Z230 Tower Workstation?
The HP Z230 Tower Workstation can be upgraded using 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB ECC UDIMMs and 4 GB and 8 GB non-ECC UDIMMs.
- What speeds are supported by the HP Z230 Tower Workstation?
The HP Z230 Tower Workstation can support up to 1600MT/s and 1866MT/s modules. (Note:1866Mh/s will clock down to 1600 MHz)
- What types of RAM are accepted by the HP Z230 Tower Workstation?
The HP Z230 Tower Workstation accepts DDR3 ECC and non-ECC unbuffered memory only.
- What is ECC Registered Memory?
ECC memory can deal with memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory eases some of the strain off of the memory controller by decreasing the electrical load which makes it more stable and reliable. The HP Z230 Workstation does not support registered memory with ECC.
- What is Unbuffered Memory?
Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between the DRAM and the system’s memory controller. Unbuffered memory can be more efficient than registered memory since there is direct communication from the DRAM to the memory controller. The HP Z230 Workstation supports unbuffered memory with ECC and without ECC.
- What is Load Reduced Memory?
Load reduced memory (LRDIMM) modules have a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading. With LRDIMMs, you can achieve a greater capacity and speed. The HP Z230 Workstation does not support load reduced memory.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
The ProLiant ML310E G8 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
- What is max configuration?
The HP Z230 Tower Workstation supports the use of unbuffered memory with ECC or without ECC. Mixing unbuffered memory with ECC and non-ECC memory may cause boot failure. The use of both unbuffered and registered memory is not recommended. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
- How many memory channels per CPU?
The HP Z230 Tower Workstation has a total of two memory channels, each with a total of 4 DIMM slots.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
The HP Z210 Workstation's DIMM slots are colored both white and black. The black slots indicates the start of a memory channel. Each slot is numbered 1 through 4, with slot 1 being furthest from the CPU and slot 4 being closest to the CPU. Slots 1 and 3 being the start of a channel.
