HPEE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Memory Configuration Guide
The HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server is a dual LGA2011 processor system with 24 DIMM slots. There are 12 DIMM slots per CPU and four memory channels per CPU. This results in each memory channel managing three DIMM slots. 3 DIMMs per channel is very important to note. This means the HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 will only support two ECC Reg Quad Rank or two unbuffered DIMMs per memory channel. Along with standard RDIMMs and ECC UDIMMs, the DL380p Gen8 also supports LRDIMMs. The ProLiant DL380p G8 supports both standard (1.5V) or low voltage (1.35V). However, do no mix the different voltages. Keep all uniform throughout your server. You also cannot mix different memory types. Different speeds can be mixed. However, please note all the modules will function at the lowest speed installed.
Cloud Ninjas' HPEE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Memory Upgrade Tips
- The HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 has 24 DIMM slots and runs on DDR3 memory.
- There are 3 types of compatible RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM), and ECC Unbuffered (server UDIMM).
- HPE DL380p Gen 8 memory sizes supported: 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB DIMMs.
- HPEE DL380p Gen 8 memory speeds supported: 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s and 1866MT/s. Please note: 1866 speed will clock down to 1600MT/s.
- The HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 can hold up to 512GB (16 x 32GB) 1600MHz for ECC Registered server memory and up to 768GB (24 x 32GB) 1866MHz for Load Reduced Server Memory. This is the max capacity.
- There are 2 CPUs. Each CPU manages 12 DIMM slots. Each CPU manages 4 memory channels. Each memory channel has 3 DIMMs per channel.
- The HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 is subject to the rank rule. The rank rule states only 8 ranks per memory channel for ECC Registered memory.
- This means the DL380p Gen8 can only hold 2 quad rank (4Rx4) DIMMs per memory channel with ECC Reg RAM. With single or dual rank, there is no issue.
- Load Reduced Memory (LRDIMMs) is a better technology and breaks the rank rule. You can install more than 8 ranks per channel with LRDIMMs.
- HPE DL380p Gen8 servers can run on 1.35V or 1.5V. Do not mix together.
- DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT MEMORY TYPES. Will result in errors.
- Think Long Term! Purchase the maximum memory for your HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8.
- Buy “HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8” memory today from Cloud Ninjas!
- The total number of memory modules that you should have in your ProLiant DL380p Gen8 should equal 4, 8, 12, and 24.
- To properly configure your server, you must install a minimum of four memory modules first.

Cloud Ninjas' HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Questions & Answers
- What memory sizes can you use for the HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server?
The HPE ProLiant DL380p G8 Server can be upgraded using single, dual rank, and quad rank 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB DIMMs. Get your upgrades kits here on this page.
- What speeds are supported by the HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server?
The HPE ProLiant DL380p G8 Server can support 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s, and 1866MT/s. Please note: 1866 will clock down to 1600MT/s which is the true fastest speed for the ProLiant DL380p Gen 8 server. Also worth noting, that lower end processors may not support faster speeds. If your RAM is clocking down below 1600MT/s then the CPU may be the culprit.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server?
The HPE ProLiant DL380p G8 Server supports three types of DDR3 memory: ECC UDIMM (server UDIMM), ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM). We do not recommend Unbuffered Memory. Too expensive on a price per GB, which is why we don't even offer as an option to buy. We recommend ECC Reg for lower end sizes such as 4GB, 8GB or 16GB. We recommend Load Reduced when looking into higher end applications that require 32GB DIMMs.
- What is ECC Registered Memory? Does my DL380p Gen8 accept ECC Reg?
Yes. The HPE ProLiant DL380p G8 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is ECC Unbuffered Memory? Will my HPE DL380p Gen8 work with ECC UDIMMs?
Yes. The HPE ProLiant DL380p G8 Server supports unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller. There are better options available and we would recommend ECC Reg or Load Reduced over ECC Unbuffered.
- What is Load Reduced Memory? Does the HPEE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 support LRDIMMs?
Great question. Yes. The HPE ProLiant DL380p G8 Server does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. LRDIMMs
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
No. Do not mix your memory. The HPE ProLiant DL380P G8 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels. Cloud Ninjas only sells matching memory kits.
- What is max configuration?
The HPE ProLiant DL380P G8 Server allows the standard maximum configuration of 512GB using 16 x 32GB ECC RDIMM and can be upgraded to 768GB using 24 x 32GB LRDIMM. Get your upgrade kit right here on this page.
- How many memory channels does the HPE DL380p Gen8 have?
There are 24 DIMMs lots running on 2 CPUs. Each CPU controls 12 DIMMs. And there are 4 memory channels per CPU with the HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8. Each channel supports 3 DIMMs. And the 3 DIMMs per channel is very important because this means the rank rule comes into play. Watch our YouTube video for more information on how the rank rule effects quad rank memory.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel for my DL380p Gen8?
This is an excellent question. The HPE ProLiant DL380P G8 Server is color coded and labeled. This makes locating the start of the memory channel much easier. Each channel starts with a white DIMM slot, followed by two black DIMM slots. HPE requires that DIMM sockets be populated sequentially beginning with the first channel. We recommend spreading your DIMMs equally across each memory channel to maximize performance.
- Where can I order memory upgrades for my HPE ProLiant DL380p G8 server?
Order your memory kits from Cloud Ninjas by finding and selecting the memory package that is right for you. Contact our sales team if you need any help figuring out the best RAM for you.
- How soon will my RAM arrive?
Orders placed before 8AM are set for same day processing and shipping. In general we ship within 24 hours of receiving the order. We do not ship on weekends. Delivery times vary based on carrier and location.
- What is the warranty on memory for the HPE DL380p Gen8 server?
Cloud Ninjas offers a one-year warranty on fully tested, refurbished memory.
