The R920 is a Quad Processor system with 96 DIMMs in total.  There are 24 DIMM slots per CPU.  Each CPUs controls two memory risers, which each have 12 DIMM slots.  There are eight memory channels per CPU and 4 memory channels per Dell R920 memory riser.  Each channel manages three DIMM slots. This means the R920 is subject to the rank rule, which state you can only have 8 ranks with ECC registered per memory channel  This means the PowerEdge R920 will only support two Quad Rank ECC Reg DIMMs per channel.  This is very important for 32GB DDR3 RDIMMs sicne they are all quad rank.  This is the reason why you can only install 64 x 32GB DDR3 RDIMM and not 96.  Along with RDIMMs, the R920 also supports Load Reduced DIMMs.  Load reduced is a superior technology and will allow users to install 96 x 32GB or 96GB even if quad rank.  We explain more below and in our video.  The Dell R920 also supports options for standard (1.5V) or low voltage (1.35V). You cannot mix different memory types and you cannot mix different memory voltages. Different speeds can be mixed.  However, the modules will clock down to the slowest speed installed.  We recommend always using matching memory kits.  This will help ensure stability.

• There are a total of 96 DIMM slots on the Dell R920 server running on DDR3 architecture.  There are 8 memory risers with 12 DIMM slots per riser.
• Sizes supported: 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB ECC Registered (RDIMM); and 16GB, 32GB or 64GB Load Reduced (LRDIMM).
• DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT MEMORY TYPES OR VOLTAGES.  RDIMMs and LRDIMMs will not work together.
• The R920 max memory configuration with ECC Registered server memory is 2TB (64 x 32GB) at 1600MT/s speed.
• The true max memory configuration is 6TB with load reduced memory. Yes.  The Dell R920 can get all the way up to 6TB (96 x 64GB) 1600MT/s Load Reduced Memory.
• Dell's spec sheet will say 64GB DDR3 DIMMs are not supported.  However, we have tested and they do in fact work!  Make sure you have latest BIOS and Intel V2 processors. 
• The R920 supports up to two quad-rank (QR) DIMMs per channel.  Rank rule does apply.  Learn more in our tutorial video below.
• Whereas three dual-rank (DR) or three single-rank (SR) DIMMs may be populated per channel.
• Speed options for the PowerEdge R920 are 1866MHz, 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz depending on the type of memory module.
• Note 1866MHz will clock back down to 1600MHz which is the fastest speed.
• There are 96 memory sockets organized into eight memory risers, split into four sets of two risers per processor.

   The Dell PowerEdge R920 Server supports DDR3 ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMMs).  ECC is stand alone and means Error Correction Code.
   
   
4. What is ECC Registered Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R920 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is Unbuffered Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R920 Server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R920 Server supports load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R920 Server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.

   The Dell PowerEdge R920 Server allows the maximum configuration of 6TB with the use of 96 x 64 GB LRDIMM and up to 2TB with the use of 64 x 32GB RDIMM.

10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
    Thank you Dell.  Dell has color coded each memory tab.  White is the first slot in the channel.  Black is the second slot in the memory channel.  Green is the third and final slot.  Dell has also labeled the motherboard to make it easy to identify the first channel as well.  A1 = first DIMM in first channel.  B1 = first DIMM in second channel and so forth.  Utilize the memory channels to maximize performance.  This is very important.
