Dell PowerEdge R810 Memory Configuration
The R810 has 32 DIMMs slots and runs on DDR3 memory. Part of the 11th gen, this 2U is a Quad Intel Processor server. Each CPUs supports 8 DIMM slots. There are four memory channels per CPU. Each memory channel manages two DIMM slots. The R810 has only one types of memory: ECC Registered RDIMMs. The PowerEdge R810 only supports standard voltage 1.5V (PC3). You cannot install ECC Unbuffered or Load Reduced You can mix different speeds, but it is not recommended as the modules will clock down to the slowest speed installed. We always ship and install matching memory kits. This is ideal for stabilization.
Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R810 Memory Upgrade Tips
- The total number of memory slots for the R810 is 32 DIMMs. This is split into 2 different motherboards. Each motherboard has 16 DIMMs and 2 CPUs.
- The PowerEdge R810 Gen I supports DIMM capacity sizes of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB. Note: 32GBs will not work with the R810 Gen I.
- The PowerEdge R810 Gen II supports DIMM capacity sizes of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB 16GB and 32GB. Update to latest BIOS and use Intel V2 CPUs.
- Speed options include: 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s and 1866MT/s. Note 1866 and 1600 and 1333MT/s will simply clock down to 1066MT/s, which is the fastest speed for the R810.
- The PowerEdge R810 can hold up to 512GB of memory (32 x 16GB) ECC Registered RDIMMs with Gen I, and 1TB of memory (32 x 32GB) DDR3 ECC Registered 1066MT/s with Gen II.
- There are 8 DIMMs per CPU. There are 4 memory channels per CPU. There are 2 DIMMs per memory channel. This is important specifically for quad rank memory.
- Each channel supports up to two RDIMMs for single/dual/quad rank. By limiting each channel to two DIMMs per DDR channel, the system can support quad-rank DIMMs at 1066 and 1333 MHz.
- Low Voltage 1.35V LV DIMMs are not supported. Only 1.5V DIMMs.
- 64GB memory modules are not supported by the Dell PowerEdge R810
- ECC Unbuffered and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are not compatible with the R810 server.
- The system consists of 32 memory sockets split into four sets of eight sockets; one set for each processor. Each eight-memory socket set is further organized into four DDR3 memory channels. The first socket of each DDR3 memory channel is marked with a white release lever.
- Think Long Term! Purchase the maximum amount that your PowerEdge R810 can hold and avoid wasting time and money on modules you won't be able to use if you upgrade again.
- The total number of memory modules that you should have in your PowerEdge R810 should equal 4, 8, 16, 24, and 32.
- To properly configure your system, install a minimum of four memory modules first.

Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R810 Questions & Answers
- What sizes modules can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R810 Server?
This is a tricky question. The Dell R810 has 2 generations. R810 Gen I can use 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB . The Dell PowerEdge R810 Gen II server can be upgraded using 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg RDIMM. Buy your 1TB upgrades kits for your Dell R810 second generation server from Cloud Ninjas. Note: Will also need Intel V2 series processors and latest BIOS for 32GB DIMMs to work.
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R810 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server can support 1866MT/s, 1600MT/s, 1333MT/s and 1066 MT/s single, dual, and quad rank DIMM.
Note: Higher speed DIMM are supported running at the speed of 1066 MT/s.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R810 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server supports DDR3 ECC Registered RDIMM only. Unfortunately ECC Unbuffered and Load Reduced DIMMs are not compatible with the Dell R810.
- What is ECC Registered Memory? Is ECC Reg supported by the Dell R810?
Yes. The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is Unbuffered Memory? Is it compatible with the R810 server?
No. The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory and is it compatible with the Dell R810 server?
No. The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered inside the R810?
No. The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
- What is max configuration for the Dell R810 server?
Similar to above, this is tricky question. The max memory configuration depends on the generation of your R810. The Dell PowerEdge R810 server first generation allows the standard maximum configuration of up to 512 GB via 32 x 16GB ECC Registered RDIMM memory For 1TB, you will need to have the second generation R810 and can install 32 x 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg 1333MT/s Server Memory. Buy your 1TB memory upgrade kits from Cloud Ninjas.
- How many memory channels per CPU are there for the Dell PowerEdge R810?
The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server has all DIMM slots directly on the motherboard, so there are no memory risers.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel for my R810?
The start of each memory channel is color coded with a white DIMM slot. A is the first channel. B is the second channel. C is the third channel and so forth. The Dell PowerEdge R810 Server memory must be installed based on the number of processors. For example, DIMM A1–A8 corresponds to CPU1, DIMM B1–B8 corresponds to CPU2. With two processors and 2 FlexMem Bridges, DIMM C1– C8 will associate with CPU1, and DIMM D1–D8 will associate with CPU2.
- Where can I order memory for my Dell R810 server?
Order your memory right her from Cloud Ninjas by finding and selecting the memory package that is right for you. Contact our sales team if you have any questions or prefer another method.
- How soon will my RAM for my R810 server arrive?
