The Dell PowerEdge R730xd has two Intel CPUs (LGA2011-3 socket) supporting 24 DDR4 DIMM slots.  This means there are 12 DIMM slots per CPU.  If we break this down a little further, then you will find there are four memory channels per CPU.  Each memory channel controls three DIMM slots.  You want to configure your memory by installing your RAM at the start of each channel.  The tabs on the DIMM slots are color coded.  White is the first DIMM of the channel.  Black is second and green is third.  "A" is the first channel.  "B" is the second channel.  "C" is the third and you go from there.  Both ECC Registered and Load Reduced are accepted.  Sizes include 4GB through 128GB.  Speeds include 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s and 2666MT/s.  If you install 2666 then it will operate at the true fastest speed of 2400MT/s.  The Dell PowerEdge R730xd maxes out at 768GB (24 x 32GB) ECC Registered or 3TB (24 x 128GB) Load Reduced Memory.  You cannot mix ECC Reg and LRDIMMs.  Different speeds can be mixed, but this is not ideal as the faster modules will perform at the slowest speed installed.

1. What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R730xd Server?
   This is a slightly tricky question.  DIMM sizes for the Dell PowerEdge R730xd server varies depending on type of memory.  RDIMMs can be upgraded using 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB modules.  LRDIMMs can be upgrades with 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB DIMMs. Buy your memory kits from Cloud Ninjas.
   
   
2. What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R730xd Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R730xd server can support memory modules at speeds of 2133, 2400 and 2666MT/s.  Please know in advance, that 2666 DIMM will clock down to a speed of 2400MT/s, which is the top speed for the R730xd server.

   Yes.  The Dell PowerEdge R730xd server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is ECC Unbuffered Memory?  Will my R730xd work with ECC UDIMMs?
   No.  The Dell PowerEdge R730xd server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?  Are LRDIMMs supported by the R730xd?
   Yes.  The Dell PowerEdge R730xd server does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. Hyper-cloud DIMM (HCDIMM or HDIMM) is considered load reduced memory which is 240-pin, 72 bit wide. 
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with Load Reduced memory?
   Negative.  You cannot mix different types of memory.  The Dell PowerEdge R730xd server does not support the use of both load reducing and ECC registered memory at the same time. It is recommended to use identical memory modules across the entire system.
   
   
8. What is max memory configuration for my Dell R730xd server?

10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel on the Dell R730xd motherboard?
    The Dell PowerEdge R730xd Server, requires memory to be installed into the first white channel marked A1 for Processor 1 and then Processor 2 the first white channel marked B1.  White is the first DIMM in a channel.  Black is the second DIMM in a channel.  And green is the third DIMM in a channel.  A is the first channel.  B is the second channel and so forth.  To maximize speed and performance, always install your DIMMs in the start of each channel (white slot).
