Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R610 Memory Configuration
The Dell PowerEdge R610 is a Dual Intel Processor server with 12 DIMM slots, 6 DIMMs per CPU. There are three memory channels per processor, which equates to 2 DIMMs per memory channel. This is important to note as single, dual and quad rank memory is all accepted. The PowerEdge R610 also supports both standard 1.5V and low voltage 1.35V. However, you cannot mix different voltages together inside your R610. Both ECC Registered and ECC Unbuffered memory are compatible with the R610. Load reduced memory is not compatible with the Dell R610. You cannot mix ECC Registered with ECC Unbuffered or errors will result. You can mix different speeds, but it is not recommended since the faster modules will clock down to the slowest speed installed. Cloud Ninjas recommends and ships matching memory kits.
Cloud Ninja's Dell PowerEdge R610 Memory Upgrade Tips
- Dell’s PowerEdge R610 is an 11th Generation 1U server with 12 memory slots utilizing DDR3 architecture.
- There are multiple sizes supported including 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB ECC Registered (RDIMM). With ECC Unbuffered (UDIMMs) you can only use 2GB or 4GB ECC Unbuffered (UDIMM).
- DO NOT MIX UDIMMs AND RDIMMs. THIS WILL LEAD TO ERRORS.
- 64GB DDR3 DIMMs are not compatible with Dell R610. 32GBs DIMM are the highest DIMM size.
- Speeds supported by the R610 include 1066MT/s 1333MT/s 1600MT/s or 1866MT/s. Both 1866 and 1600 will clock down to 1333.
- Load Reduced modules, also known as LRDIMMs, are not an option for the PowerEdge R610 server. The R620, which is the next generation, will be the first Dell server product line (12th Gen) to support LRDIMMs.
- The max configuration for Dell PowerEdge R610 is 384GB of ECC Registered memory via 12 x 32GB DDR3 1600MHz. With ECC Unbuffered memory, 48GB (12 x 4GB) is the max. ECC Reg is hands down the better solution.
- R610 servers operate with Intel 5500 or 5600 series processor. The motherboard has two CPU sockets (LGA1366).
- Each Intel processor maintains three Memory Channels and each channel is clearly color coded. White is the start of each channel. Black is the second DIMM in the channel.
- If you were configuring your system with 6 modules and 2 CPUs, then the best configuration would be utilizing each of the 6 white DIMM slots and skipping the 6 black DIMM slots. This will help to maintain the proper load balance. However, you should consider maxing this machine out with 12 DIMMs.
- The R610 supports all three types of ranks. Single rank, dual rank as well as quad rank memory.
- Speeds: 1866MHz, 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz are all options.
- Max out your Dell PowerEdge R610. Buy Dell R610 server memory today from Cloud Ninjas!
- The total # of memory modules to properly load in your PowerEdge R610 should equal 3, 6, or 12 to enable an even load distribution.
- To properly configure your Dell R610 server, install a minimum of two memory modules.

Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R610 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R610 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server can be upgraded using 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB RDIMM or 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB UDIMM.
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R610 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server can support 1866MT/s, 1600MT/s and 1333MT/s, 1066MT/s. Note: 1866 & 1600 clock down to 1333 which is in fact the fastest speed memory for R610 servers.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R610 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server supports two types of memory: DDR3 ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and DDR3 ECC Unbuffered (server UDIMMs). Unfortunately Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are not compatible with the Dell R610 or any other 11th gen Dell server.
- What is ECC Registered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is ECC Unbuffered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server supports unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory? Does the R610 support LRDIMMs?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
No. The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels. Cloud Ninjas only ships out matching memory kits.
- What is max configuration?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server allows the maximum configuration of 384GB with the use of 12 x 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg RDIMM at a speed of 1333 MT/s and can be configured to 48 GB using 12 x 4GB ECC Unbuffered UDIMMs at a speed of 1333 MT/s.
- How many memory channels per CPU?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server has 12 DIMM slots with 6 memory channels total, and there are 3 memory channels per CPU. Each memory channels controls two DIMMs per channel. This is important. The R610 is not effected by the rank rule. The R710 runs into this issue because of 3 DIMMs per channel.
- How do I identify the Dell R610 memory channels?
The Dell PowerEdge R610 Server is labeled and color coded by Dell. The first DIMM slot of each channel is white. Black is the second DIMM slot in the channel. This is important. If you are installing 6 DIMMs, then it is recommend and best practice to install your DIMMs in the start of each channel, which are the white slots. A1 = first channel and first DIMM. B1 = second channel and first DIMM and so forth. The motherboard is labeled and we have a diagram above for your reference.
- Where can I order memory for my Dell R610 server?
Order your memory at right her on this page by finding and selecting the memory kit perfect for your application. Prefer another method? Contact our sales team today. We are flexible and here to make buying easy and simple.
