Dell PowerEdge R530 Memory Configuration
The R530 is a Dual Intel Processor system with 8 DIMM slots on the first CPU and 4 DIMM slots on the second CPU. There are four memory channels per CPU. The channels on the first CPU control two DIMM slots each. However with CPU2, the memory channels only control one DIMM slot each. White is the start of a new memory channel. Black is the second slot in the channel. A is the first channel and B is the second channel. Speeds include 2133, 2400 and 2666MT/s. Sizes include 4GB through 64GB. You can mix different sizes. You can max different speeds, but we do not recommend as all the modules will operate at the slowest speed installed. You cannot mix ECC Reg and LRDIMMs. Cloud Ninjas only ships matching memory upgrade kits.
Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R530 Memory Upgrade Tips
- There are a total of 12 DIMM slots inside the Dell PowerEdge R530 server.
- This system is based on DDR4 memory architecture.

Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R530 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R530 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R530 server can be upgraded using 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB DIMMs. Get your memory upgrade kit from Cloud Ninjas
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R530 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R530 server can support memory modules at speeds of 2133, 2400 and 2666MT/s. However, 2666MT/s will function at 2400MT/s.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R530 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R530 Server supports two types of memory, which are DDR4 ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs). ECC unbuffered is not supported.
- What is ECC Registered Memory? Is ECC Reg compatible with my Del R530?
Yes. The Dell PowerEdge R530 server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is ECC Unbuffered Memory? Will the Dell R530 server support ECC Reg?
No. Unfortunately, the Dell PowerEdge R530 Server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory? Does the Dell PowerEdge R530 work with LRDIMMs?
Yes! The Dell PowerEdge R530 Server does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. Hyper-cloud DIMM (HCDIMM or HDIMM) is considered load reduced memory which is 240-pin, 72 bit wide. LRDIMM differs from low capacity, low voltage registered memory modules (LV RDIMM).
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
No. The Dell PowerEdge R530 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
- What is max memory configuration for the Dell R530?
The Dell PowerEdge R530 server supports the standard maximum configuration of 384GB using twelve 64 GB DDR4 RDIMMs or LRDIMMs. Buy your upgrade kit from Cloud Ninjas.
- How many memory channels does the R530 have?
The Dell PowerEdge R530 server has 12 DIMM sockets across 2 CPUs. The DIMMs are not evenly distributed. CPU1 supports 8 DIMM slots and has 4 memory channels controlling 2 slots per channel. CPU2 has 4 slots and each slot is it's own channel.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel for the PowerEdge R530?
White DIMM slot is the start of a new memory channel. Black DIMM slot is the second slot in the memory channel. A is the first channel followed by B. Dell has labeled the motherboard and color coded the DIMM slots. Refer to the technical guide on this page for more details.
- Where can I order memory for my Dell R530 server?
Order your memory right here on this page by finding and selecting the memory package that is right for you. Or contact our sales team for more information. We are here to make this smooth and easy.
- How soon will RAM for my Dell R530 arrive?
Orders placed before 8 am are set for same day processing and shipping. Delivery times vary based on carrier and location.
