The R530 is a Dual Intel Processor system with 8 DIMM slots on the first CPU and 4 DIMM slots on the second CPU. There are four memory channels per CPU. The channels on the first CPU control two DIMM slots each.  However with CPU2, the memory channels only control one DIMM slot each.  White is the start of a new memory channel.  Black is the second slot in the channel.  A is the first channel and B is the second channel. Speeds include 2133, 2400 and 2666MT/s.  Sizes include 4GB through 32GB.  You can mix different sizes.  You can max different speeds, but we do not recommend as all the modules will operate at the slowest speed installed.  You cannot mix ECC Reg and LRDIMMs.  Cloud Ninjas only ships matching memory upgrade kits.

Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is ECC Unbuffered Memory?  Will the Dell R530 server support ECC Reg?
   No.  Unfortunately, the Dell PowerEdge R530 Server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?  Does the Dell PowerEdge R530 work with LRDIMMs?
   Yes!  The Dell PowerEdge R530 Server does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. Hyper-cloud DIMM (HCDIMM or HDIMM) is considered load reduced memory which is 240-pin, 72 bit wide. LRDIMM differs from low capacity, low voltage registered memory modules (LV RDIMM).
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   No.  The Dell PowerEdge R530 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
