Dell PowerEdge R320 Memory Configuration Guide
The R320 is a Single Processor system with 6 DIMM slots. There are three memory channels, and each memory channel manage two DIMM slots. The start of the memory channel is the white slot followed by the black slot. ECC Registered is the main type of memory for the Dell R320 and what Cloud Ninjas recommends. Different speeds can be mixed, but do note the modules will clock down to the slowest speed installed. We recommend all matching memory. All our kits are matching. This helps keep your R320 running stable.

Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R320 Questions & Answers
- What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server can be upgraded using 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB RDIMM in 1333 or 1600MT/s and 2 GB or 4 GB UDIMM in 1600MT/s.
- What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server supports 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s and 1866MT/s. Do note 1866 does clock down to 1600 so no advantage in speed. The true fastest speed for the R320 is 1600MT/s.
- What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server has a flexible memory configuration that accepts up to two quad-rank, dual-rank, or single-rank ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM) or ECC Registered (RDIMM). We recommended RDIMMs over UDIMMs since higher scalability and less expensive. You can only install one type of memory in the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server and cannot mix types.
- What is ECC Registered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
- What is Unbuffered Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server does support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
- What is Load Reduced Memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
- Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server supports the use of both unregistered and registered memory. However, only one type of memory can be used when upgrading. Additionally, non-ECC UDIMMs are not supported. Mixing ECC and non-ECC UDIMM anywhere on the platform will prevent the system boot functionality.
- What is max configuration?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server allows flexible memory configurations from capacities of 2GB to 192 GB. 6 x 32GB = 192GB for the max.
- How many memory channels per CPU?
The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server has 3 channels with 2 slots per channel.
- How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
Dell PowerEdge R320 Server memory modules must be installed in each channel, starting with the DIMM farthest from the processor; largest rank count to smallest.
- Where can I order memory for my server?
Order your memory right here on this page by finding and selecting the memory kit that is right for you. Need help? Or prefer another method? Contact sales@cloudninjas.com or call and we will help find the perfect kit for your application.
- How soon will my RAM arrive?
Orders placed before 8 am are set for same day processing and shipping. Delivery times vary based on carrier and location.
- How long is the warranty on memory purchased from CloudNinjas.com?
Cloud Ninjas offers a one-year warranty on fully tested, refurbished memory. - Is this RAM Dell labeled or Dell branded? No. The memory shipped from Cloud Ninjas is compatible with your Dell system. However, it will not have a Dell sticker. We ship major brands such as Samsung, Hynix and Micron.
