The R320 is a Single Processor system with 6 DIMM slots. There are three memory channels, and each memory channel manage two DIMM slots.  The start of the memory channel is the white slot followed by the black slot.  ECC Registered is the main type of memory for the Dell R320 and what Cloud Ninjas recommends.  Different speeds can be mixed, but do note the modules will clock down to the slowest speed installed.  We recommend all matching memory.  All our kits are matching.  This helps keep your R320 running stable.

• There are a total of six DIMM slots inside the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server.
• There are 3 memory channels and 2 DIMMs per channel.
• Sizes supported by Dell R320 include 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB DDR3 registered memory (RDIMMs).
• This server will also support 2GB, 4GB or 8GB unbuffered memory modules (UDIMMs).
• Load Reduced Memory is NOT supported.  This is one of the few 12th gen servers from Dell that does not support LRDIMMs.
• The Dell PowerEdge R320 can max out at 192GB of DDR3 ECC Registered memory via 6 x 32GB PC3-12800R 1600MHz.
• Whereas, you can only use 48GB of unbuffered memory via (6 x 8GB PC3-12800E) modules.
• The R320 has 6 DIMMs per CPU, three memory channels per processor, and two DIMM slots per memory channel.
• You can use single, dual or quad rank Registered Modules. However, you can only use single or dual rank Unbuffered Modules.
• Cloud Ninjas recommends buying the maximum RAM for your PowerEdge R320, which will provide long term infrastructure support.
• We also recommend filling each channel and running the R320 with 2 ,4, or 6 DIMMs to properly configure your system.
• A minimum of two memory modules must be installed.

1. What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server can be upgraded using 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB RDIMM in 1333 or 1600MT/s and 2 GB or 4 GB UDIMM in 1600MT/s.
   
   
2. What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server supports 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s and 1866MT/s.  Do note 1866 does clock down to 1600 so no advantage in speed.  The true fastest speed for the R320 is 1600MT/s.
   
   
3. What types of RAM are accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server has a flexible memory configuration that accepts up to two quad-rank, dual-rank, or single-rank ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM) or ECC Registered (RDIMM).  We recommended RDIMMs over UDIMMs since higher scalability and less expensive.  You can only install one type of memory in the Dell PowerEdge R320 Server and cannot mix types.
   
   
4. What is ECC Registered Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server supports registered memory with ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is Unbuffered Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server does support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server does not support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server supports the use of both unregistered and registered memory. However, only one type of memory can be used when upgrading. Additionally, non-ECC UDIMMs are not supported. Mixing ECC and non-ECC UDIMM anywhere on the platform will prevent the system boot functionality.
   
   
8. What is max configuration?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server allows flexible memory configurations from capacities of 2GB to 192 GB.  6 x 32GB = 192GB for the max.
   
   
9. How many memory channels per CPU?
   The Dell PowerEdge R320 Server has 3 channels with 2 slots per channel.
   
   
10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
    Dell PowerEdge R320 Server memory modules must be installed in each channel, starting with the DIMM farthest from the processor; largest rank count to smallest.
