Dell PowerEdge 2900 Memory Configuration

The 2900 is a Dual Processor system with 6 DIMM slots per CPU. There are two memory channels per CPU.  Each memory channel manages three DIMM slots. Different speeds can be mixed but the modules will function at the slowest speed installed.

• The total number of DIMM slots for the PowerEdge 2900 is 12.
• The PowerEdge 2900 will supports 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB Fully Buffered DIMMs (FBD) Modules.
• The Maximum amount of RAM the PowerEdge 2900 server can hold is 64GB (8GB x 8) of Fully Buffered DIMMs (FBD) memory.
• You cannot install 96GB - The Intel chipset 5000X maxes out at 64GB.
• Best configuration is 2 x 8GB per memory channel.  4 per CPU.
• When purchasing new memory it is best to purchase identical memory modules to what your system already has. Your current server configuration will determine the supported DIMM type and speed.
• The PowerEdge 2900 runs on 667MHz memory.
• Think Long Term! Purchase the maximum amount that your PowerEdge 2900 can hold and avoid wasting time and money on modules you won't be able to use if you upgrade again.
• Memory sparing and memory mirroring require eight or twelve FBDs, and all FBDs must be of identical memory size, speed, and technology
• Memory sparing and memory mirroring cannot be implemented at the same time.
• The total number of memory modules that you should have in your PowerEdge 2900 should equal 2, 4, 8, or 12. To properly configure your system, install a minimum of two memory modules first.
