HP Z420 Workstation Memory Configuration Guide

The HP Z420 Workstation is a Single Processor system with 8 DIMM slots. There are four memory channels each consisting of two DIMM slots. The Z420 supports ECC UDIMMs, RDIMMs, and LRDIMMs. 1.35V (low voltage) and 1.5V (standard voltage) are supported, but the systems will only allow DIMMs to run at 1.5V. Different memory types and voltages cannot be mixed together. Speeds on the other can be mixed, but all modules will run at the same speed of the slowest module installed. It is best practice to have matching memory inside of your system to ensure stability. With this in mind, we only ship matching upgrade kits. Depending on the CPU if processor choses in the Intel E5-1600 Series, on Registered memory will work; however, if E5-2600 series CPU is being used Load Reduced memory will work.

   The HP Z420 Workstation can be upgraded using 1GB - 8GB ECC UDIMMs and 1GB - 32GB RDIMMs and LRDIMMs. 
   
   
2. What speeds are supported by the HP Z420 Workstation?
   The HP Z420 Workstation can support 1066MT/s 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s, and 1866MH/s based on DIMM and configuration. If 1866MT/s ECC UDIMMs and RDIMMs will clock down to 1600 MT/s. 
   
   
3. What types of RAM are accepted by the HP Z420 Workstation?
   The HP Z420 Workstation supports DDR3 ECC UDIMMs, RDIMMs, and LRDIMMs.
   
   
4. What is ECC Registered Memory?
   ECC memory has the ability to fix memory errors in your server system. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory relieves stress off of the memory controller by decreasing the electrical load which increases its stability. The HP Z420 Workstation supports registered memory with ECC.
   
   
5. What is Unbuffered Memory?
   Unbuffered memory has no register between the DRAM and the system’s memory controller. Unbuffered memory can be more efficient than registered memory since there is a direction connection from the DRAM to the memory controller. The HP Z420 Workstation supports unbuffered memory with ECC. 
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?
   Load reduced memory (LRDIMM) modules are designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading. the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. The HP Z420 Workstation supports load reduced memory. 
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   The HP Z420 Workstation does not support the use of non-ECC unbuffered memory, however it does support ECC unbuffered. Mixing unbuffered memory with ECC and non-ECC memory may cause boot failure. The use of both unbuffered and registered memory is never recommended. It is best practice to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
   
   
8. What is max configuration?
   Depending on the type of RAM, you can get a different maximum configuration. The HP Z420 allows a maximum configuration of 64GB using eight 8GB ECC UDIMM or RDIMM modules. Alternatively, if you aim to reach an even high peak, the HP Z420 Workstation allows the maximum configuration of 256GB using eight 32 GB LRDIMM modules. 
   
   
9. How many memory channels per CPU?
   The HP Z420 Workstation has a total of 8 slots which are numbered 1 through 8. Each channel has 2 DIMM slots per channel. There is a total of four channels.
   
   
10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
    The HP Z420 Workstation's DIMM slots are colored both white and black. The black slots indicates the start of a memory channel. Each slot is numbered 1 through 8.
