Dell PowerEdge R730 Memory Configuration Guide

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a Dual Intel Processor server with 24 DIMM slots total.  There are 12 DIMMs per CPU and there are four memory channels per CPU.  Each memory channel manages three DIMM slots.  White is the start of the channel, followed by black and then green.  A is the first channel, followed by B then C and so forth.  The R730 is a DDR4 based server.  Both ECC Registered and Load Reduced modules are compatible.  Speeds include 2133MT/s 2400MT/s and 2666MT/s.  Note 2666 runs at 2400MT/s.  Sizes supported depend on type.  RDIMMs - 4GB through 32GB.  LRDIMMs - 16GB through 128GB.  Different speeds can be mixed but we do not recommend and all the modules configured will operate at the lowest speed installed.  Not ideal.  We only ship matching memory kits to ensure stable performance.

1. What sizes can you use for the Dell PowerEdge R730 Server?

2. What speeds are supported by the Dell PowerEdge R730 Server?

Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. 5. What is ECC Unbuffered Memory?  Does the R730 accept ECC server UDIMMs?
   No.  The Dell PowerEdge R730 server does not support unbuffered memory with ECC. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?  Do LRDIMMs work with the R730 server? 
   Yes.  The Dell PowerEdge R730 server does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. Hyper-cloud DIMM (HCDIMM or HDIMM) is considered load reduced memory which is 240-pin, 72 bit wide. LRDIMMs are not subject to the rank rule and the server views them as dual rank instead of quad rank.
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Registered with Load Reduced?
   No.  The Dell PowerEdge R730 server does not support the use of both load reduced and registered memory inside one system.  While both are compatible, they are not compatible together.  ECC Reg and LRDIMMs must be used separately. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration across the entire server to ensure stability.

10. How do I identify the start of the memory channels inside my R730?
    The Dell PowerEdge R730 server, requires memory to be installed into the first white channel marked A1 for Processor 1 and then Processor 2 the first white channel marked B1.  White is the first DIMM in the channel.  Black is the second DIMM in the channel.  Green is the third DIMM.  A = channel #1.  B = channel #2 and so forth.  Dell has color coded the DIMM slots and labeled the motherboard to make it as user friendly as possible.
