Cloud Ninjas' HP ProLiant DL380 G7 Tips
Applications
Looking to manage complex virtualization environments? The DL380 G7 might be the perfect fit for you! Hewlett Packard designed this server in mind for companies in the Cloud. High Performance Computing is another application for which the DL380 G7 is well suited. The extra RAM Capacity goes a long way for virtualization. SMBs who just need a high quality server to manage all your day to day business can count on the DL380 G7. This server is great for Email, Print, Storage or Redundant Backup Server. The ProLiant Gen 7 servers are built to handle a wide range of applications.
Storage
The DL380 G7 comes standard with an 8-Bay chassis for 2.5in SFF drives. There is an optional second cage to create a 16-Bay chassis supporting all 2.5in Small Form Factor drives. You also have the choice of a 6-Bay chassis which switches to 3.5in LFF drives. The 6-Bay option allows for the most storage with 24TBs via a 6 x 4TB SATA configuration. Whereas the 16-Bay option maxes out at 19.2TBs with a 16 x 1.2TB SAS configuration. As usual, 2U servers offer more internal storage than 1U servers. The HP DL380 G7 continues this trend with almost three times the storage capacity of the DL360 G7 (9.6TBs). Enjoy simplifying your virtualization environment with 24TBs of storage.
Processing Power
This 7th Generation used HP server operates with several of the same Intel CPUs as the DL380 G6 offering more scalability options. HP’s ProLiant DL380 G7 runs on two Quad Core or Hexa Core processors from the Intel Westmere Product Family (5600 series). Each Intel Part Number has a letter at the front to indicate Power Consumption and Performance: “X” = High Performance ; “E” = Enterprise Performance ; “L” = Lower Wattage. Cloud Ninjas recommend using two of the X5690 (3.46 GHz) for High Performance Computing or Virtualization. E5620 is a great value CPU for everyday business. Max out your DL380 G7 with 2 x Intel X5690!
Memory
Similar to the 6th and 8th Generation, the 7th Generation of ProLiant Server from Hewlett Packard support DDR3 1333 RDIMMs and UDIMMs. Unbuffered DIMMs are more energy efficient and Registered DIMMs allow for higher scalability. The DL380 G7 has 18 DIMMs slots and UDIMMs can only run 12 slots and maximum capacity is 48GB with 4GB x 12 configuration. Whereas the RDIMMs maximum capacity is a whopping 384GBs of RAM with a 12 x 32GB configuration. The HP ProLiant DL380 G7 options for speed will depend on the memory and processor configuration and include 1333MHz, 1066MHz or 800MHz. Cloud Ninjas strongly recommends initial investment on the RDIMMs for less costly and higher potential of scalability in the future.
