HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Memory Configuration Guide

The HP ProLiant DL360P Gen8 is a 1U server with dual CPUs and 24 DIMMs slots.  Memory is DDR3 architecture.  Each CPU controls 12 DIMM slots and has four memory channels.  Each memory channel manages three DIMM slots, which is important to note.  3 DIMMs per channel means the HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 is subject to the rank rule and will only support two ECC Reg quad rank modules or two unbuffered DIMMs per channel. There are three types of compatible memory: ECC Registered, Load Reduced and ECC Unbuffered.  The HP ProLiant DL360p G8 also supports standard (1.5V) or low voltage (1.35V) memory.  You cannot mix different memory types or different voltages. Different speeds can be mixed.  We do not recommend, as the modules will all operate at the slowest speed installed.

• There are 3 DIMMs per memory channel.  Thus the issue.
• Rank rule states only 8 ranks per memory channel.
• Desktop RAM is not accepted by the ProLiant DL360p Gen8 server.
• 64GB DDR3 memory modules are not supported.
• Depending on the memory configuration and processor model, the memory speed may run up to 1600MHz DDR3 DIMMs.

1. What sizes can you use for the HP ProLiant DL360p G8 Server?
   The HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 rackmount server can utilize DIMM sizes of 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB DDR3 server modules.  64GB DDR3 modules are not supported.
   
   
2. What memory speeds are supported by the HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Server?
   The HP ProLiant DL360p G8 server will work with speeds of 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s, 1866MT/s.  It is worth noting, that 1866 will clock down to 1600MT/s which is the fastest possible speed.
   
   
3. What types of RAM are accepted by the HP ProLiant DL360p G8 Server?
   The HP ProLiant DL360p G8 Server supports three types of  DDR3 server memory.  ECC Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM) and ECC Unbuffered (server UDIMM).  We recommend ECC Reg for lower sized DIMMs and LRDIMMs for larger size DIMMs.  We do not recommend ECC Unbuffered as they are more expensive and have less scalability.
   
   
4. What is ECC Registered Server Memory?  Does my DL360p Gen8 support RDIMMs?
   Yes.  The HP ProLiant DL360p G8 Server supports ECC registered memory.  ECC memory detects and corrects memory errors within the server environment. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory transfers less electrical load to your memory controller which makes it more stable and reliable.
   
   
5. What is ECC Unbuffered Memory?  Will the ProLiant DL360p G8 work with ECC UDIMMs?
   Yes.  The HP ProLiant DL360P G8 Server supports ECC unbuffered memory. Unbuffered memory is memory that has no register between your DRAM and your system’s memory controller.  This is the most expensive option on a price per GB scale.  And this is the least scalable option.   We advise seeking other alternatives.
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?  Is the HPE DL360p Gen8 compatible with LRDIMMs?
   Yes.  The HP ProLiant DL360p G8 Server does support load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM). Load reduced DIMM is designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading, the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed.
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   No.  The HP ProLiant DL360P G8 Server does not support the use of both unregistered and registered memory with ECC or the use of non-ECC memory. It is recommended to use identical memory configuration in all channels.
   
   
8. What is max memory configuration?

9. How many DIMMs are there per memory channels?
   The HP ProLiant DL360p G8 server has 24 DIMMs slots across two processors.  The are 12 DIMM per CPU and 4 memory channels per CPU. Each channel supports 3 DIMMs.  This is important as the DL360p Gen8 will be subject to the rank rule and is the reason only 16 x 32GB RDIMMs are installed, as opposed to 24.  You can only install 2 quad rank RDIMMs per channel.
   
   
10. How do I identify the start of the memory channel?
    This is an excellent question.  HP has labeled and color coded the DIMM slots.  White is the start of a new channel followed by two black DIMM slots.  The HP ProLiant DL360p G8 Server requires that DIMM sockets be populated sequentially beginning with channel A for processor 1 and then processor 2.
