Cloud Ninjas' HP ProLiant DL360 G6 Tips
Applications
This system is ideal for virtualization, clustering or hosting. Great for databases or firewalls. Commonly used as a File Server, Print Server or Storage Server. The scalability of the ProLiant DL360 G6 offers a multitude of features to handle your intended application.
Storage
HP’s DL360 G6 offers more storage capacity than its G5 predecessor. Standard comes with 4 x 2.5in SAS with the ability to support 8 x 2.5in SAS (need 2nd backplane to upgrade). MAX out your storage potential with 8 x 500GB SATA Drives or 8 x 600GB SAS Drives. 4.6TB SAS in a 1U Server with 192GB of RAM and 2 Hex-Core Processors make the DL360 G6 the perfect combination of power, density and efficiency.
Processing Power
This refurbished HP server offers lots of options. The ProLiant DL360 G6 has the capability to accept two Dual Core, Quad Core or Hex Core CPUs. Power Management is the theme of the DL360 G6 and for this reason the standard server comes with one CPU requiring 3 sets of fans instead of 4. With the addition of 2nd CPU, you would remove the blank add in a 4th set of fans. Cloud Ninjas recommend 2 x X5670 Six-Core 2.93 GHz Intel Xeon Processors. The X5670 is a 64-bit processors with 12MB cache.
Memory
The DL360 G6 runs on DDR3 Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs. There are 18 DIMM slots (9 per CPU). Need 2nd processor for all 18 slots to be active. When you look inside the DL360 G6, the white DIMM sockets are the first DIMMs per channel for that memory channel. The speed of the DIMMs may run at 1333MHz, 1066MHz or 800MHz depending on the type of memory and processor configuration. Unbuffered DIMMs max out at 48GB (12 x 4GB). While Registered DDR3 DIMMs max out at 192GB (12 x 16GB).
Other Features
Generation six comes equipped with all new features to enhance efficiency, increase performance and reduce power consumption. The general theme of the DL360 G6 is Intelligent Power Management and Cooling Efficiency. HP’s DL360 G5 has 4 or 5 thermal sensors. The new 6th Generation has over 30 thermal sensors to control the fan motors and power consumption more efficiently. Hewlett Packard designed the fan motors to stop during use when not applicable. The addition of the 1U Common Slot Power Supply provides different options - 450W, 750W or 1200W. The 450W PSU can cover all configurations with exception of High Watt Graphic Card which Cloud Ninjas recommend checking HP’s enhanced power calculator to ensure upgrade required. The Insight Display is the same as G5. Front ports offered USB, Video, UID and Power Switch. Back ports include 2USB, 2 Gigabit NIC, Keyboard, Mouse, Serial, Video and HP’s iLO2 Management Port. Similar to the DL360 G5, you have Two PCI Express Expansion Slots: one full length and one full height, which are now PCI Gen2. This is x16 connection slot and can convert to PCIx Slot if required. You also have a Low Profile, half-length slot which is not convertible. PCI Cache connector is below the PCI slots. Comes with an embedded storage controller - P410i. Base of 0 Memory RAID – Upgrade to 256MB Cache or 512MB Cache for Performance Models. Spend less for power and demand efficiency.
