Cloud Ninjas' HP ProLiant DL160 G6 Tips
Applications
This server was built for High Performance Computing, Web2.0 (and varieties), Cloud Computing and Software as a Service. You will find increased performance, bandwidth and energy efficiency compared to the 5th Generation. The DL160 G6 also is great for virtualization and hosting. If you need a commonplace server to handle daily needs such as Print, File or Storage, then the DL160 G6 is a worthy option to review.
Storage
HP's DL160 G6 comes standard with 4 Cabled Drives. You have the capability to upgrade to 8 Hard Drives Bays. The Cabled server runs on 3.5in SAS/SATA/SSD Hard Drives. The 8Bay servers switches from the LFF to the 2.5in SFF running SAS/SATA/SSD. The 3.5in LFF is more common and what Cloud Ninjas stock. You can actually put more storage in the 4-Bay with 3TBs equaling 12TB. Whereas the 8-Bay chassis only accepts 1TB and maxes out at 8TB. We recommend the 4Bay chassis for the fact it supports more internal storage and the 3.5in drives utilized in the 4-Bay are less expensive than the 2.5in drives inside of the 3.5in.
Processing Power
Similar to the DL360 G6 and DL380 G6, the ProLiant DL160 G6 supports Intel Westmere and Nehalem CPUs powered with Hyper-Threading Technology. However, the DL160 G6 goes slightly further and you can upgrade to the X5690 (3.46 GHz). Intel's quick path architecture is taken advantage of in the DL160 G6 to gain the most out of the 18 DIMM Slots. Cloud Ninjas highly recommend either the max configuration (2 x X5690) or the value configuration (2 x E5620).
Memory
The DL160 G6 supports both Registered and Unbuffered DDR3 DIMMs. This HP Server rocks 18 DIMM slots (9 per CPU). Similar to the DL360 G6 and DL380 G6, you will need a second processor to activate all 18 slots. Depending on what type of memory and CPU configuration you select, the HP ProLiant DL160 G6 run at speeds of 800MHz, 1066MHz or 1333MHz. Registered DDR3 DIMMs will max out at a whooping 288GB (18 x 16GB). While the Unbuffered DIMMs will only max out at 48GB (12 x 4GB).
Other Features
HP's 6th Generation of Servers focused on energy efficiency and power management. The DL160 G6 continues this trend. HP set up zoning inside the server so the fans do not have to work at a full load to reduce power consumption. Standard DL160 G6 systems come with the 500W Power Supply. This does not have to go through a power supply backplane to reduce the energy loss you would normally find with other server PSU Backplanes. VRDs, which are 300 system level, were installed throughout the system to increase efficiency over 90% inside of the board itself. Tool less rails and an easy set up CD were designed for rapid deployment. The G6 also comes with better SIM support than previous generations.
