The Dell Precision T1700 is a Single Processor system with four DDR3 DIMM slots. There is a total of two memory channels, each consisting of two DIMM slots. This system supports both ECC and non-ECC unbuffered memory as well as Standard Voltage (1.5v) and Low Voltage (1.35) modules. You cannot mix different memory types and voltages. Different speeds can be mixed, but the modules will function at the slowest speed installed. We recommend that all of the memory inside your T1700 be matching modules. 4. What is ECC Registered Memory?
   ECC memory has the ability to fix memory errors in your server system. Registered (also called buffered) memory modules register between DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. ECC Registered Memory relieves stress off of the memory controller by decreasing the electrical load which increases its stability. The Dell Precision T1700 Workstation does not support ECC Registered memory.
   
   
5. What is Unbuffered Memory?
   Unbuffered memory has no register between the DRAM and the system’s memory controller. Unbuffered memory can be more efficient than registered memory since there is a direction connection from the DRAM to the memory controller. The Dell Precision T1700 Workstation supports unbuffered memory with ECC and without ECC. 
   
   
6. What is Load Reduced Memory?
   Load reduced memory (LRDIMM) modules are designed with a buffer chip (or chips) to replace the register to help minimize loading. the LRDIMM increases server system memory capacity and speed. The Dell Precision T1700 Workstation does not support load reduced memory. 
   
   
7. Can I mix ECC Reg with ECC unbuffered or Non-ECC memory?
   It is never recommended to mix different memory types. Mixing unbuffered memory with ECC and non-ECC memory may cause boot failure. The use of both unbuffered and registered memory is never recommended. It is best practice to use identical memory configuration in all channels.

   The Dell Precision T1700 Workstation supports up to 32GB of ECC UDIMMs and 16GB of Non-ECC UDIMMs.
