Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R710 Tips
Applications
Looking for a multi-purpose core application server? You have found the right server! Dell’s R710 offers a wide range of applications from Storage to Virtualization. Perfect for basic everyday server use or for creating multiple VMWare Environments. Other applications include clustering, hosting or as a redundant server. This 2U server offers scalability and efficiency in an affordable package.
Storage
There are two generations of R710s. The R710 G1 comes in several different chassis options: 4Bay, 6Bay & 8Bay for drives. The R710 G2 options include 8Bay 2.5in or 6Bay 3.5in SAS/SATA or Solid State Drives. Cloud Ninjas recommend the 8Bay right away to receive the most bang for your buck on enterprise equipment. 8Bay option is scalable to 12TB and creates a powerhouse Dell 2U.
Processing Power
Similar to the R410, R510 and R610, the Dell PowerEdge R710 supports Quad Core or Six Core Intel CPUs utilizing Hyper-Threading Technology. The R710 runs on the Westmere (55xx Series) and Nehalem (56xx Series), which means the PowerEdge R710 is powered by top of the line Intel CPUs. When compared side by side with DL380 G6, the same CPUs are running roughly 15% hotter than R710. Given that Energy Efficiency and Power Management is key for these two line of 2U Servers, this is an interesting comparison. Cloud Ninja recommends utilizing two Hex Core X5680 (3.33GHz) Intel CPUs for maximum processing power. Best value CPU would be 2 x E5620 (2.4GHz).
Memory
The Dell R710 supports 18 DIMM Slots and runs on DDR3 Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs. This refurbished Dell server operates with 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB Module Sizes. Maximum RAM equals 288GB (16GB x 18). Cloud Ninjas highly recommend spending the extra money upfront to insure the longevity of your R710 with a 288GB Configuration. A value configuration would be 72GB (18 x 4GB).
Other Features
R710 comes with 4 PCI-E for Fiber Cards, NIC Cards and so forth. This refurbished Dell Server also comes with four embedded Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit NICs. Now you have the option of different Wattage for your power supply including 570W for High Efficiency or 870W for High Output.
