Cloud Ninjas' Dell PowerEdge R410 Tips
Applications
The PowerEdge R410 packs power and can handle a multitude of applications. This server is excellent for everyday server uses such as email, print or storage. The R410 brings enhanced virtualization with capability of numerous VMWare environments. Other common applications are clustering, HPC, hosting or as a redundant server. Dell has delivered a price friendly 1U server that is energy efficient and scalable.
Storage
The R410 has two configurations and comes in Cabled and Hot Swap Hard Drives. Options include 4 x 3.5in Cabled Drives, 4 x 3.5in Hot Swap Drives or 4 x 2.5in Hot Swap Drives. We personally recommend the Hot Swap 2.5in for speed and 3.5in for storage. Maximum storage is 4 x 2TB offering 8 TBs of internal storage. In comparison, the R610 has 6 Hard Drive bays and maxes out at 12 TBs. Both systems bring top notch 1U storage. A good idea would be to max out with 8 TB upon initial investment. This offers powerful performance for many years to come.
Processing Power
Similar to the R510, R610 and R710, the Dell PowerEdge R410 handles two Quad Core or Six Core Intel CPUs. Dell's PowerEdge R410 is driven by the Nehalem (55xx Series) and Westermere (56xx Series). As always, Dell operates on top tier Intel CPUs utilizing Hyper-Threading Technology. The R410 is a hefty replacement to the older PowerEdge 1950. Maximize your processing power! Cloud Ninjas recommend running your R410 on two Intel Hex Core X5680 (3.33GHz) CPUs. Looking for the most out of your dollar? The “Best Value CPU” would be using 2 x Intel E5620 (2.4GHz).
Memory
The Dell R410 supports 8 DIMM Slots and operates on DDR3 Registered ECC or Unbuffered DIMMs. Like the other Dell 11th Generation Services, the PowerEdge R410 will work with your choice of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB Module Sizes. The Maximum amount of RAM equals 128GB (16GB x 8). We believe it is always a good decision to capitalize on the endurance of your R410. An upfront investment on the 128GB Configuration is worth considering. The “Best Value RAM” configuration would be 36GB (8 x 4GB).
